Destination Picker Bottom: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 23

  • Published on

This stream archive runs about 55 minutes and opens on a card reading "Stream Archive" and "Destination Picker Bottom", with no episode number, so the number here comes from the playlist. The top half of Basket Station's destination picker is in. This time Basket heads underneath it to build the part that does the real work: the droppers that hand out destination tokens.

The fix from last time

Basket starts with a tour for anyone new. You walk up to the wall, hit a button for where you want to go, a lamp lights and a sign tells you the destination. "Some fancy stuff happens down below," a cart comes out, and when you hit the go button the train knows where to take you.

Up in the redstone, Basket points out the change from last stream. A one-tick pulse from a piston used to break into the line next to it whenever a block powered, which kept the middle buttons from working. A couple of extra blocks with redstone on top fixed that. Basket stands on a bed to skip the night (on this server one person on a bed is enough), then tests the fourth button to see whether the signal can push the sticky pistons that far. It can.

How the bottom works

Below the buttons, each press will send a short pulse down to a set of droppers holding that destination's tokens. They drop onto ice, water pushes them along, and they fall into a collection line that carries them to where the engine cart gets loaded. Hoppers will keep the droppers topped up. It's the same idea as the small rail stations, only bigger. The small stations space their droppers two apart, but up top the buttons are three apart, so some rows are set one block in and pushed down to a second layer.

Droppers, a floor and a wall

Basket heads all the way down in feather falling boots to craft a stack of droppers from cobble, then comes back up to set sticky pistons and droppers in place. Next comes a stone brick floor across the whole level, with torches so nothing spawns. One open question: the freight yard has to fit in somewhere, and Basket isn't sure whether it will end up under this level.

The dropper rows follow a pattern Basket marks out in dirt first: "dirt, dirt, dirt, dirt, skip two." Every dropper will need either destination tokens or blanks, so the plan is cobble renamed "junk" as filler. Basket also counts out eight blocks for a wall where the water will stop. There will be ice and water on two lines with a wall down the middle, so the tokens wash out in both directions as quickly as possible. In the in-game chat, soapthgr8 joins, Basket waves with "o/" and adds "streaming, no cussin", and soapthgr8 answers "duly noted :-)".

Redstone, then hoppers

Basket makes more droppers than needed this time and runs redstone dust along the tops of the rows, finding a way to place it without having to look down at each block. There are two blocks of headroom under the droppers here, unlike the small station, so Basket can walk underneath to set up each one later. Packed ice will probably go in instead of regular ice, to leave room for lights.

The redstone runs low, so a branch mining trip is coming. soapthgr8 signs off with "that's it for me for now in-game." Basket starts the hoppers: one line feeding into the droppers and a second set on top that zigzags back and forth to move items between them. Then the hoppers run out too. More hoppers and more redstone will have to wait for next stream, or for time in between.
