Small Rail Station Planning: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 74

  • Published on

This episode runs about 69 minutes and opens on a card reading "Episode 74" and "Small Rail Station Planning." With the Basket Station mall done, the next job is the small rail stations. Basket built the current one in survival without a clear plan, and it shows: "This is a mess. This is crazy." The plan is a tutorial so other players can build their own, and today is prep work, going back and forth between the station on the server and a creative world on another server. Basket is the only player seen on the Hypermine server.

A look at the old station

Basket heads down to the bottom of the existing station, which stands about 66 blocks tall plus the bedrock, and takes screenshots to work from. The station is out of carts, and one piece is pointing the wrong way. "No wonder I'm out of carts." A second look says that part was fine after all. "I lied." Basket leaves it for later and switches worlds.

Seeing through the walls

The creative copy sits inside a glass box. Basket sets up command blocks that swap every stone brick for barrier blocks and back again, so the tutorial can show the bare redstone and then the build as a player would really make it. The first command fails over an extra slash and a block name typed wrong, then it works.

The bank of empty carts

The bottom layer is where empty chest minecarts wait. Hoppers sit under the carts with furnaces on top to cut down on lag, and a comparator and a clock let out one cart for each item dropped into the hopper. Basket loads a pile of chest minecarts and tests it: one item in, one cart out.

That cart then climbs an elevator, picks the item back up and drops it into a dropper, ready for the next request. The dropper holds 42 items. A button press drops it to 41, and after the cart's trip it reads 42 again. "We don't lose any items. This is sort of a closed system."

The elevators go three rails up and overlap the next three, easier to place when you can fly. One wiring mistake breaks a rail, so Basket clears out every cart by sending them off the edge onto cactus. Then the carts run through the spot just fine anyway. "I wasted all that time."

Unloading full carts

Next comes the part that empties carts arriving with engines, destination tokens and other items. A cart rolls onto a detector rail, a hopper drains it, and after a delay it launches. A test with a full stack sends it off holding 12 items. "It's not the most efficient thing in the world, but it works." Basket checks the original on the server and finds a chest is needed so the hopper holds the items long enough to be detected.

Swapping the blocks breaks a sloped rail, so that block stays as dirt instead of stone brick. A test cart drops in, empties, rides up and lands on top of the cart bank. Basket plans to offer the whole build as a download.

Starting from the top

Back on the server, Basket climbs to the main floor, where engine and caboose carts are filled. That floor was built last and is cramped. The go button sits too close to the loop that detects each cart's type, so back in creative Basket tests whether slime blocks and sticky pistons can be chained to push it further down. Twelve slime blocks move fine, but quasi-connectivity gets in the way of chaining more. "Maybe that's gonna be my limit." Time runs out with the top floor still to plan.
