Normal Difficulty: Untold Stories 3 Episode 17

  • Published on

Last time the cave spiders were not poisoning anyone, and this is the episode where they do something about it. They turn the difficulty up in the middle of a spider-infested mine, and it goes about how you would expect.

Did we miss anything?

It opens in a corridor full of spawners, with one of them asking why they are the only one breaking any. They are carrying iron they do not want to lose, and the first job is working out what in this section is still undone. They walk past the dig from last episode and agree it was a good waypoint. One spawner gets spared. They had mercy.

Mobs in the webs

The mine ahead is webs and rails, and the webs turn out to be on their side. Skeletons, zombies and even an Enderman get stuck in them, which one of them calls very convenient. There is a bat stuck in a web, a bunch of skeletons killing each other, and more spider spawners. Someone notes they were due for a trap last time.

An emerald turns up, and so does a lot of lapis that will need the Fortune pick, which is not with them.

Turning it up

Then a spider bite, and no poison. They remember they were going to address that. The difficulty had been set to normal twice when they started, but the client still says easy. So they back out of combat, stop the recording for a moment, and fix it.

Scoti rejoins, and the plan is simple: let's go get poisoned. Yay, poisoned. It works right away, and one of them is losing a lot more life than before.

Fixing things by making it worse

A chest gives up a gold Mending pickaxe and shovel, a sword and an axe, all gold, so they will need careful handling. Then the death messages start. Scoti is slain by a cave spider. Silverfish spawners turn up, skeletons drop from the ceiling, and Scoti dies to a spider again. Basket goes down right after, and wakes up in a bed back at base.

Why did they change this? They were doing so well before, and people in the comments had said so. How does it feel to get exactly what you wanted? Normal difficulty, one of them decides, is the name of this episode. Fixing things by making it worse.

Back for the stuff

On the way back to their gear there is a short argument about death counts from the start of the run, which nobody settles. Basket is not healing, cannot eat faster than the poison, and dies to a cave spider a second time. The emerald is safe in a chest, at least.

With torches spammed up the right side, they finally kill the spider spawner. A plain bow is lost, a pair of beat-up magic pants are on the ground, and the chest by the lapis gets opened. The Fortune pick is back in the inner chest, so the lapis waits for another day.
