Across to the Jungle: MHC August 2013 Episode 2

  • Published on

The title card reads "Minecraft Hardcore Challenge August 2013," with "E02" in the corner. Basket is still on the small starting island in game show host Michael Deering's August challenge, one apple short of the three needed before heading east. "I need to get one more apple. And then I can start heading East."

The third apple

While the trees grow, Basket makes two boats "to be on the safe side." A zombie in the water keeps catching fire: "It's like he's slowly killing himself by peeking his head up over the water." Basket thinks about spending the day's one animal on a squid, but swimming around would cost food. Then, chopping one more oak, an apple drops out of the leaves. The inventory now shows three. "Alright, so now I actually have all the stuff I need." Basket grabs saplings and torches, "'cause we won't be coming back here."

East by boat

The boat ride doesn't count against the episode, and the rule is to land around the same time of day as when Basket left. So Basket sails east, notes the new boat mechanics are "really weird," and waits offshore so monsters don't gather on the beach. The hunger bar disappears in the boat, though Basket later notices getting "hungry while I was on the boat. Not very much, but a little bit." The first landfall is a strip of sand with sugar cane on it, and it turns out there was farther to go. Basket heads back out on the water, and soon the jungle comes into view. "So here is the jungle."

One cow

Basket digs up sand on the beach "in case I want to make some glass," then walks inland. Cows wander in the trees. "You can't kill cows," Basket starts to say, then remembers the rule allows one animal a day. "You are my one cow or my one animal for the day." The cow drops beef.

A hole for the night

Night is coming, and "it's very dangerous in 1.6, and also in the jungle." Basket digs into the ground near some big trees, sets up a furnace, cooks the beef and eats it. "Mmm, beef. Nice steak." The plan is for zombies "and stuff" to collect in one part of the hole so Basket can kill them. The six iron is still unspent; a bucket is on the list, since there's no renewable food yet.

A mineshaft underneath

To wait out the night, Basket crafts ladders and digs a shaft straight down, using a trick of "straddling the two blocks." Farther down, the shaft opens into an abandoned mineshaft full of cobwebs and wooden supports. "Well, that's a dangerous, cool find." The webs mean "strings certainly won't be a problem," and there is iron in the walls: "six more. So that's 12 total." A pickaxe breaks with no spare this time, so Basket crafts a new one.

Basket stops there, alive, with "a mine shaft right underneath my first little hidey hole." The game pauses and the end card follows, with no gameplay after it.
