Terrified of Our Own Handiwork: Captive Minecraft 4 Episode 27

  • Published on

We head back underground in Captive Minecraft 4, where the tunnels we dug in earlier episodes have gone dark and filled up with mobs. The plan for this one is simple: relight the whole mess, clear out the spawners, and cut a safe path to the teleport room.

Reunited in the Dark

The episode opens with us trying to find each other in the gloom. One of us is above, one is caddy corner across the way, and that kicks off a friendly argument about whether it is caddy corner or kitty corner (an Ohio thing, apparently). Before we even settle it, there is a witch, then a creeper, and the tone for the next half hour is set.

The ladders are wrecked and the stairs are toast, so a lot of the early going is just figuring out which parts of our own base still connect to each other. Every promising side passage turns out to have darkness in it, and darkness means something is spawning.

Terrified of Our Own Handiwork

This is the running joke of the episode. We built these tunnels, and now the tunnels want us dead. "I never thought I would be terrified of my own handiwork," one of us admits while creeping down a corridor lined with our own torches. Skeletons pour out of a spawner, a punch bow keeps trying to knock us into lava, and gravel with lava sitting on top of it turns a simple dig into a trap.

We fall into a rhythm anyway. Spot the darkness, shoot the creeper from range so it does not blow up the border blocks, light the room, move on. When the torches run low we start rationing sticks and wood between us, because running out of light down here is how you die.

Creepers, Spiders, and a Whole Lot of Badness

The mob list keeps growing. Baby spiders inspire a full "no more monkeys jumping on the bed" bit as we blow them up one at a time (two down out of five). Cave spiders swarm a torch-lit floor, zombies come in fast, and somewhere in the mix there is an enderman and a chest that coughs up a guardian block. We keep opening chests and counting out sets of three, feeding the room of monuments block by block.

Nobody is loving the spiders. "I hate everything about you," Basket tells one. "You have no reason to exist other than to annoy." Fair.

Into the Flooded Cavern

A drop into a big open cavern gives the episode its prettiest moment, with blue water pouring down over the stone. It also hides a witch, who goes down and leaves behind a healing potion that we scoop up and slot onto the hotbar. There is iron to grab here too, plus more coal, and the usual worry about where all the lava overhead is going to end up.

Best Spawner Ever

Late in the episode a room keeps making noise, and it finally clicks: a zombie spawner. We dig in, drop the mobs as they fall through, and break it. The reward chest is the best of the night, gold horse armor, gunpowder, melon seeds, and bones. It is the kind of loot that makes a rough Minecraft session worth it. "Best spawner ever," one of us decides, and it is hard to argue.

With the area around the teleporter finally secure, we call it. The pickaxe needs a repair, Basket is a hair away from level 30 and wants to enchant so it is time to head to the surface and resupply before the next run.
