Natural Gas Power, Episode 10: Oxygen Not Included Season 4

  • Published on

Episode 10 is the last Season 4 video on the channel, and it opens on yet another colony. After a loading screen, the top bar names it The Super Duper Cosmos, at Cycle 39 with 12 duplicants, 1,200 kcal of food and a Starvation alert. The stream goes to tapping a natural gas pocket for power, feeding a hungry colony and calming stressed duplicants. It stops at Cycle 45 with 13 duplicants and about 45,600 kcal, in the middle of a look at why the wires keep breaking.

A different save

"So I've saved and I believe I can load a different save." After the loading screen comes a tour. "I'm having some issues with food right now, and I guess high stress." This map has two natural gas geysers close to the base ("I haven't seen two on one map before") and an oil reserve below it. There is no dirty water tank this time: water from the sinks and bathrooms gets dumped straight down, beside a big tank of clean water. The kitchen has been switched over to mush bars.

Opening the gas pocket

Power is the other problem: "they're not making food because there's no power." The plan is to finish a natural gas generator and its pipes, then break open a pocket of gas next to the base. The metal for it has to come from across the map. Meanwhile the stressed duplicants get a massage table in a temporary spot, with one battery, so "they don't freak out."

Once the pipes are done, the dig goes in at priority nine. An orange cloud fills the cave, and a hover card over it reads Hydrogen: "there's hydrogen up here too." Then "here comes natural gas." A cable gets connected, and a few minutes later the commentary says it: "we have natural gas power now." On the way, the commentary points out where the colony's first death happened: a duplicant starved standing next to the refrigerators, in a room with no air at the time.

Feeding the colony

The Food shortage alert hangs on for a long time. More mushrooms and "meal wood" go in. The temperature view shows the ground getting warmer toward the bottom of the map, and near the oil it is "scalding hot," a place the commentary says duplicants should not go without a suit. Mushrooms can take more heat and like carbon dioxide, so another row of them goes in low in the base. A grimy duplicant has nowhere to wash, so a small shower area gets built too.

Later the kitchen switches from mush bars to Liceloaf. A Select a DNA Blueprint screen then offers Max (+6 Cooking, with an interest in cooking), Lindsay (+5 Digging) and Bubbles. "Let's do cook," and the top bar goes from 12 duplicants to 13. Soon: "I think we're doing okay with food now." Food climbs from 1,200 kcal at the start to over 45,000.

The grooming station

The critter wrangling "works out pretty well": the critters eat sand and a duplicant grooms them. One station's card reads Grooming Station, with Outside of Stable in red. The commentary looked for a ranch station in the research and could not find one, so walls go up around the grooming station to see if a room fixes it.

Where it ends

The wires keep failing all stream. "The cables always breaking is really obnoxious in this game." In the power view the batteries get a close look: "I don't really understand why these break all the time." Running bigger cables from the generators seems to help. Then the stream cuts to a "will be right back" screen, and after it the commentary says it is time to go. The game sits on the pause menu, and the stream's end screen runs to the last frame. The top bar last read Cycle 45, 13 duplicants and about 45,600 kcal, with three broken buildings, Low Immunity and no research selected.
