Building a Safe House: Aftermath S1 Episode 2

  • Published on

The title card reads "S1E02, Building a Safe House." It's night, and Basket is back in the little hideout outside the city from last time with only two torches. The plan is to dig down and see what turns up. "See if I can get some resources."

Iron in the dark

The caves under the hideout are pitch black, but they pay. "So we got some iron over there and some iron over here. We are in business." There is coal too, and enough iron that Basket starts thinking about where to stash it. Food is the problem: "we don't have any food yet except for like a little bit of zombie flesh."

There's also no bed this time. "I don't have a bed. I didn't think about getting one, so I don't know where I'll go when I die." The chat keeps reminding Basket how that goes for other people: "ck73hunter fell to the hunger of the horde!" Then a zombie in gold armor comes around a corner of the cave, and Basket cuts it down with the stone sword.

For all the join and death messages, Basket still hasn't met anyone. "I don't think I've even seen anybody else."

Rotten flesh bites back

Back up top, the iron goes into a furnace, and Basket finally eats some of that zombie flesh. "Oh, what's happening?" The chat spells it out: "That hurt! Eat some cooked food!" Lesson learned: "eating rotten zombie flesh hurts." Basket did not see that coming. "Well I wasn't expecting that at all, ouch."

Somewhere else, "darkeagle9698 starved to death." With hunger running low, Basket gets the point. "I'm going to have to eat something, aren't I?"

Staring at wheat

So it's farming. "I'm going to plant some wheat and watch it. Just stare at it." Basket makes a stone hoe, tills a patch of dirt inside the cave and plants seeds. A pile of bones means bone meal, so "I'm not doing too bad there."

Then comes "the big debate," cookies versus bread. "I think I'm going to go with cookies." The jungle trees outside carry cocoa pods, and by Basket's math, "you'll get eight hunger filled up per two wheat." It might be wrong. "The saturation factor might be big enough. I'm not really sure." The first batch comes out of the crafting table and straight into Basket's mouth.

Making it safe

Now the hideout gets work. Basket builds stairs, puts torches around and hauls in more dirt to grow the farm. There's an iron axe now too, which turns out to be a regret: "I don't know why I wasted that on the axe."

Basket also thinks about other players. "I'm assuming you can see other people's name tags, so if I'm in the area, people could find out where I am." There was already a crafting table here when Basket arrived, so someone may have been logged out here. "It's okay, they can live here, or steal from me." Basket thinks about putting smooth stone over the entrance "in case there are bad people that come by."

With a bucket, Basket spends a while fixing a pool of water in the cave so it stops flowing and sits still, "so that you can still navigate around."

The last job is a cocoa farm on jungle logs next to the wheat. "I'm going to let some of this stuff grow," Basket says, and stops there. The end card runs to the close of the video, with no gameplay after it.
