Storage Cell: Hypermine Modded Episode 3

  • Published on

Episode 3 of Hypermine Modded is moving day, followed by a lot of programming. Basket packs up the old base through ender chests, moves to a new spot, and builds a first storage cell: a turtle living in a column of chests that can count what it holds and sort new items into the right chest. The video jumps across several days. When it ends, the cell can store items, but the new terminal cannot find it yet.

Moving day

Most of the old base is already packed when the video starts. Everything goes into an ender chest, which feeds a hopper and a stack of diamond chests below. At the new base the same setup goes on top, so the items come out at the other end. Someone on the server chat had suggested putting a diamond on the ender chest's lock, which makes its color code "personalized to me." A cut later, everything has moved over.

Counting a chest

A turtle cannot look inside a chest. It can only compare items with its own inventory. So the first script, chestinventory, has the turtle place a chest below itself, pull everything out of the chest in front, count it, and put it back. The first test prints only a table and the number 62. Printing every value shows a damage, a count and a name rather than the ID Basket expected, which turns out "sort of more helpful." After a fix off camera, a mixed chest reads 5 of one kind of log, 33 rubberwood logs and 318 cobblestone. Basket calls it "phase one."

The storage cell

The small version comes next: a diamond chest on top as swap space, and a column of chests with a turtle living inside. To test the trip home, Basket moves the turtle down one and turns it right "so that it gets a little bit lost." On the run it climbs to the top, turns until it faces the diamond chest, then works down the column and prints what each chest holds. Chest 4 is empty, the next has cobble, the next dirt.

Days later a Master Control computer stands nearby, its code unfinished. The new job is storing the buffer. The turtle takes items out until it grabs something that does not match, puts that back, and carries the rest to the chest that already holds the same item. Cobble, dirt, netherrack and redstone end up where Basket predicted. "So this works as I expected." Up top, a blueprint on the chunk grid plans eight storage cells per section in four directions. Retrieval is next.

StorageCell1 and a visitor

By the next clip, the first spoke is laid out above ground and StorageCell1 sits under glass. TOLoneWolf drops by in red armor and dark wings and says "hey" in chat. They talk turtles, and TOLoneWolf mentions people storing information, so Basket adds a database. That way the cell would not have to redo its inventory every time the server starts.

A spawner in the cave

In a cave close to the base, Basket shows off a zombie spawner with chests beside it, holding iridium ore, a bee, saddles, a Thaumium hoe and an Apprentice's Ring of Ordo. A skeleton spawner would have been more useful, for bone meal. Deeper down, the tunnel runs into a slime chunk. "Let's ditch this."

Where it ends

Back at the base, the terminal talks to Master Control, but asking for a list of storage cells returns "No Storage Cells Found." For some reason the cell is not answering. The plan is to ask for cobble and have turtles and ender chests deliver it to the terminal. Basket admits "it took a long time to get the storage cell code working properly." The cell is still taking inventory as the episode ends, with a last look across the base at sunset.
