First Rail Station: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 5

  • Published on

The rails finally start in episode 5. The title card reads "Episode 5 / First Rail Station," and the episode does two jobs: kill a wither for a beacon, then lay out the first station of Basket's rail network on the south side of Port Hypermine.

A wither in a box

Basket has found a three-by-three spot to spawn a wither, using a trick from a video made for Minecraft 1.8. There's "a chance it won't work at 1.9," so Basket comes geared up: speed and fire resistance potions, plus the enchanted sword "Basket's Pillager." Basket blocks off the entrance, places the three wither skeleton skulls, and the wither spawns right where it should, under the bedrock ceiling.

"Okay cool, so it still works at 1.9." In the chat, djibouti_dan types "welp." and ectorvynk says "gl!" With the trick working, the wither goes down fast. "First nether star as far as I know on the server," Basket says, and crafts a beacon back at home. There isn't enough iron for a full pyramid yet, so the plan is to gather more and use the speed mining to dig out the station.

Port Hypermine South

By the next cut the beacon is complete. A line of red blocks runs across the town with a sign on it: "proposed bridge -basket." Next to it is the dug-out space for the Southern Port Hypermine rail station. Basket puts down a stone brick floor and checks the roof line from the house up the hill, so the station won't block another player's view.

The design takes some explaining. Four buttons on one wall will fire dispensers below that fill a chest minecart. Riders hop in a cart, hit the go button, and every cart in the station heads off on a smart rail that knows where to go from the button pressed. Behind the walls, sticky pistons will push slime blocks. The iron and gold for that machinery aren't in hand yet, since the server's iron and gold farms are still being built. Night falls partway through, and Basket uses the chat buttons to make it day.

The creative world mock-up

Basket switches to a creative world, where the working station sits in iron blocks as a proving ground. It has rows of powered rail, programmable destinations and a chest minecart parked in its slot.

The question is what fits in the leftover space. Basket moves the door over, adds stairs so nobody needs ladders, buries the switches and raises the building one block for an upper floor. That floor could hold offices, or it could sort arriving trains into engines, cabooses, passengers and freight, with freight sent upstairs. "For now I'll make it offices."

Beams and buttons

Back on the server, the walls go up in stone brick with spruce log beams and a cross beam lined up with the upper floor. The door placement still bugs Basket, and a few windows depend on where stairs land.

One more trip to the creative world settles the measurements. Back inside, Basket places four wooden buttons along the wall where the signs will go, the go button on the next wall, and counts out six openings where carts will drop in. A half slab keeps mobs from spawning in the gap. A path will lead from here to the road and the bridge.

Still no roof

The roof waits until between episodes, possibly slabs. Basket wants to see the building from a distance first. The last look is from across the river, beams up and windows still open. The credits run to the end with no gameplay after them.
