Rail Station Planning: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 7

  • Published on

This one doesn't happen on the Hypermine server. Basket streams from a flat, sandy test world of Basket's own, full of white mockups and loose redstone, with the stream chat along for the ride. The job is the redstone for the smaller rail stations planned for the server. Nobody else is in the world, and nothing built here is on the server yet.

A mockup of the south station

The first stop is a pulled-apart copy of the south rail station layout, mirrored from the version on the server. Rails come in and split, and an activator rail kicks riders out of their minecarts. That works on anything riding, "a villager or a cow or whatever," so a villager conductor won't work with this station design.

Next Basket sends a row of carts out on a loop, launched all at once by a button, to see whether they drop through a hole at a steady pace. They don't. Some stall, some bunch up, and carts slow down when they hit a wall. A block here and a two-tick delay between launches fixes it: "they all got through the little circle I made about the same speed."

An oak sapling for an engine

With the spacing sorted, Basket builds a one-block item sorter beside the track. An oak sapling stands in for the real token, which will be an item named "engine." A cart carrying one gets switched off the main line into a holding pen, and every other cart goes straight on. Basket gives the middle cart two saplings to be sure, hits the button, and it works: "it's gonna divert everybody with an oak sapling." A second sorter will do the same for cabooses.

The plan for Basket Station

Basket takes a break from the tangle to tour a full mockup of Basket Station: the main floor, the launching bay, a row of destination buttons, and a big rail yard where trains split off to different stations. "That's the stuff that will be in that big huge empty space I'm digging out."

Chest cart or passenger?

The hard part is telling a chest minecart from a passenger cart. Basket asks the chat for ideas and floats putting a cow in the cart, but mobs are "kind of picky with carts" now. A viewer asks whether a chest minecart is tall enough to trip a tripwire, so Basket tests it. It isn't.

So it's hoppers. The first try fails: the item passes through so fast that nothing sends a signal, half slabs keep blocking the redstone, and a cart can climb a step it can't drop back down. Then a viewer suggests putting a chest between the hoppers. It works ("you're so smart"), and a cart sent through with 14 stone gets switched off and still has its 14 stone at the end. Empty chest carts get a junk leather on the way in so they show up too.

During a short break the camera rests on a villager behind a row of chests, left over from the test in Episode 3 to see whether zombies could reach it. They can't.

Freight to the lobby

The last stretch is about where everything goes. Engines and cabooses get sorted out first. Chest carts with items ride up into a room on the station's second floor for their owners to collect. Empty ones go into a magazine to be reused, and plain minecarts get broken on cactus. Item elevators changed in 1.9 and Basket doesn't fully trust them to bring those carts back up, so the answer is a chest cart that carries other carts.

Basket ends with a reality check. There's no rail station at the iron farm yet, and Basket Station is still a big hole in the ground, so the next step is building some of this redstone for real. The stream ends there, with no title card at the start and no credits.
