Railroad Crossing Noises: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 14

  • Published on

This stream archive runs about 65 minutes and opens on a card reading "Railroad Crossing: Cling Clang" and "Stream Archive", with no episode number, so the number here comes from the playlist. It all happens at the level crossing on Basket's double red-bed line from last episode. The fences already rise when a cart comes through. What's missing is a bell and some lights. jandoncom, Nemsun, Cassildz and MTBucket all show up in the in-game chat.

Fixes since last time

Basket starts with a tour of the room under the crossing. The car counter used to count wrong now and then, so there are now buttons on each side that knock one off the count by hand. The two droppers in the counter also have hoppers between them now, in case carts come from both directions at once.

The cling clang

Sound comes first, "because it's gonna be a little easier." Basket crafts note blocks, sets them on either side of a pair of repeaters, and hooks them to a clock that only runs while a train is in the system. Gravel under the note blocks gets a listen, and then plain air wins.

To hear it from the street, Basket logs a second camera account in by the crossing. jandoncom asks in chat, "Where do you need me Basket?", then rides the line through and back: "Okay. Just coming back the other way." The noise starts the moment the fences come up, which is how a real crossing does it. A little later Basket says, "I think that's actually an empty cart that stopped," and points out that this is exactly what the reset buttons are for.

Lights that blink

Next come four redstone lamps on stone posts beside the fences, with slabs on top so mobs can't jump up there. Getting them to blink is the hard part. The room underneath is already packed with pistons, reset lines and the counter, and every new torch seems to power the wrong block. "It's like a puzzle that should be super easy to figure out."

One fix cuts off the cart reset button, and Basket has to dig back in to fix that. Lining the two lamps up takes "lots of repeaters. There's repeaters everywhere." By the end of it Basket says the clock should really sit in the middle and feed both sides, and plans to do that later.

The other side

The second pair of lamps gets its own clock. Partway through, two creepers come down the hill toward the crossing, so Basket backs away from the redstone and gets out a bow. Back underground, a few more torches and a half slab under some gravel get the signal where it needs to go.

Ta-da

At the end the bell plays, the fences rise and all four lamps blink. Hit the reset button and it all stops, although the second pair keeps blinking a moment longer. "It's a mess," Basket admits, and the two sides don't flash in step yet. Rewiring both off one clock is on the list for later. For now it works.
