Rail Laying with JB_Warsmith: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 34

  • Published on

This stream runs about 64 minutes and opens on a card reading "Hypermine Day", "Stream VOD" and "Rail Laying with JB", with no episode number, so the number here comes from the playlist. It all happens on the Hypermine Vanilla server. JB_Warsmith is there for the whole build, shown by a nameplate and in-game chat, and the two of them talk on a voice call. Near the end jandoncom turns up in chat with "<jandoncom> o/".

Meeting at the small station

The redstone under Basket Station gets a day off. Basket asks in chat, "Wanna meet up in town to work on rail building?" and JB_Warsmith answers "SURE", so they meet at the small rail station. The plan is the line that loops around town, from the station south of town to the one that will sit north of it. Basket clears the rain, and they walk out to the line.

The template

Basket shows how the finished part is built. Gravel goes under the track, then five regular rails and three powered rails, with a redstone torch on the block under the powered ones. Spruce fences run along both sides to keep things like horses off the track. Slopes climb one block every two so carts don't face a steep hill. And trains keep right: "that was my first rule" for this server.

Gravel that was already there

JB_Warsmith takes gravel duty, counting from a corner as Basket suggests so the torch spots stay open. Then Basket finds a surprise: "Spoilers. It turns out I've already put gravel over here." A lot of the bed was laid ages ago, so they move on to rails. Past a coming junction there will be another station "right under these trees", and maybe a branch out toward the witch farm someday.

Rails go down fast. Powered rail runs out, then regular rail, so it's back to the chest for wood and iron to craft more.

Into the tunnel

Where the new rail meets the tunnel from the other side, the two lines are about three blocks off, on a big slope. A run to the gold farm brings back a full stack of gold blocks, ten more blocks and 28 ingots, so powered rail stops being a problem. Basket mines smooth stone with a silk touch pickaxe for the track bed, which is meant to end up all smooth stone.

The test ride

A minecart goes up the slope fine. With the powered rails this close together, carts also tend to roll all the way to the end of the line, which suits Basket: fewer carts left sitting around. The ride has a glitch, though. The rider shows up invisible, and the cart rides in the middle of the track. At the offset end they settle on six powered rails, since the cart is already at full speed.

The chamber in the tunnel stays a plain turn for now. Basket also explains the smart system to come: a button in a station drops a chest cart full of destination tokens, riders hop in behind it, a caboose marks the end, and each intersection takes the right token and switches the track.

Set toward the station

By the end, powered rail covers the whole stretch to the intersection, down to the last one in hand. The intersection will be reworked later anyway, so Basket just sets it to send traffic toward the station by default. A lever on the rail itself does nothing, since the block the rail sits on is what needs the power. Once that's sorted, the turn at the junction is set, arriving traffic switches over on its own, and Basket thanks JB_Warsmith for the help. The credits and a card about the server's members run to the end, with no gameplay after them.
