Empty Chest Cart Requester: Hypermine Vanilla S2 Episode 35

  • Published on

This stream runs about 73 minutes. It opens on a card reading "Hypermine Vanilla VOD" and "Empty Chest Cart Requester" with no episode number, so the number here comes from the playlist. All of it happens on the Hypermine Vanilla server, under Basket Station. Basket works alone until the last minute, when "jandoncom joined the game" shows in the in-game chat, followed by "<jandoncom> I'M IN" and "<jandoncom> And hi :-D".

Engines, sorted off camera

Some work happened between streams. The mechanism that empties arriving engines had an orientation problem, so Basket swapped everything around. Now engines come in, get detected, run up into the first open slot and empty out. A rail flips as each slot fills and flips back as the engine leaves. If every slot is full, an extra circuit sends engines around in a circle until one opens up. After that they join the regular empty minecart line down to storage.

One item, one cart

Today's job is the other end: asking storage for an empty chest cart and sending it up. The plan is item-based. A dropper sends an item down to a hopper at the bottom. A comparator reads it, and while an item is there a clock keeps a sticky piston pulsing so storage lets one cart out. The cart picks up the item on its way, which stops the dispensing, and a hopper at the top takes the item back so it can be used again.

The first try stalls partway up. Basket's guess is that the track isn't sloped there, so the whole thing moves up one block. The clock runs too fast, and Basket has brought exactly one repeater down, so it's back upstairs to craft more. A test with an item dropped in by hand works: "Okay, it did work, and I grabbed the item."

Items don't fall straight

Then the request has to come from above. Basket fires a dropper straight down from the top and goes looking for the cobblestone. It never reaches the hopper. "So it doesn't drop down straight down like I was hoping." The fix is a closed shaft, four walls of smooth stone, so the item can only go one way. That means more hoppers, so Basket crafts hoppers and chests.

Digging out room for it runs into lava. Basket clears it with a water bucket, loses some rail to the lava, and has to rebuild the track after the carts glitch through it.

Loading carts and loop-backs

Basket loads a stack of empty chest carts into the system from the floor above. A lever test sends a cart, but it stops where the item sits on a powered rail. Swapping in a regular rail, then powering the next piece, gets it going: "And it grabs the item and goes up. Amazing." A viewer suggests two hoppers under the rail in case one misses the item, and Basket agrees it would be easy to add.

Carts that bump into each other could roll back, so Basket adds a loop that sends them around again, with the levers raised on top of blocks to fit.

Where the cart goes

The last piece is the switch at the top. A detector rail fires a dropper when a cart passes, sending the signal back to bring in another cart. By default a delivered cart heads for the caboose's spot, unless a hopper holds an item, which flips the track. A block of packed ice above the intersection makes the switch act up, so Basket breaks it out.

In the first full test, two carts come up instead of one, because an extra cart was stuck down in the system. The second test sends nothing at all, and Basket's guess is that storage has run out of carts. "Assuming that I had enough cars I think this thing works." The credits run to the end with no gameplay after them.
