A Crown of Topaz: Monumenta Episode 2

  • Published on

With the tutorial done, Basket is loose in town with no idea where to start. "I feel like as an MMO player, I want direction." This episode finds some: a jeweler, a mine to the north, and a cap that's supposed to bring luck.

Looking for a yellow name

The rule Basket is working from: a yellow name means a quest. The first likely-looking name turns out to be orange. There's a wand for sale, but it costs experience, and Basket doesn't have any yet. Basket also became a patron the day before, and patrons get sparkles from the Donator Hall, though it might take someone on the server a few days to switch that on.

Chat recommends the jeweler. Basket had already wandered into the jeweler without noticing.

A duchess wants a tiara

Aimee, the jeweler, opens with "Did someone from the crafter's guild send you to help me?" Nobody did, but Basket clicks through anyway, and it takes a second try to work. A duchess has commissioned a tiara, and Aimee is out of gems. Topaz was once found in a mine north of town. Would Basket check? The quest is marked short and very easy. "I like very easy."

The quest compass doesn't point north, it points at the quest, which happens to be the way Basket wants to go. Outside the walls are player plots, including a big guild hall on land Basket remembers as empty. It's night, and from what Basket understands, it's always night.

Someone got there first

The northern mineshaft has already been picked over. Another player has been through and killed the spawners, mostly. A shift-right-click with the compass shows how long until the terrain resets: five minutes and twenty seconds. There's still a zombie or two to deal with, and a pile of items on the floor that Basket isn't sure about taking. They go into a chest in case the owner comes back.

The bigger problem is the class. Without a wand, Basket can't use any abilities at all. "I can still play regular Minecraft."

Two minutes to reset

Chat warns that the dungeon respawns in two minutes, and that it's smart to get out first, since every spawner comes back. Basket has a question nobody can answer from experience: what happens if you're still inside? There's some lag, then Basket walks straight into more spawners. "Oh, I'm gonna die." It's time to run, eat some bread, and go back in more carefully. The foreman is "really tough," until it isn't. Some of the mobs are stuck in webs. The haul is mostly zombie flesh, since the other player already took the currency.

Topaz delivered

Finding the jeweler again takes a couple of wrong turns. Then Aimee is thrilled. "Here, take this cap as thanks. It's fragile, but will bring you good luck when you open chests while wearing it." Aimee might have another job later. The chat reads "A Crown of Topaz complete," with a Topaz Cap, one Imperial Coin and 32 Enchanting Bottles.

The coin goes somewhere safe. The cap can't go on yet. Another cap Basket is wearing has Curse of Binding, so it's stuck. The Topaz Cap gets saved for opening chests later. "We got our quest reward."
