Told You So: Untold Stories 3 Episode 3

  • Published on

The episode opens with the aftermath of a creeper, our gear scattered across a cavern, and one very specific item missing. Scoti had told Basket not to carry it around.

Welcome back, we have not worked out our differences

Basket opens by saying we worked out our differences, then immediately corrects himself. We did not. The argument is still live and it is about whether he should have been walking around with the number one emerald in his pocket.

A creeper caught Scoti. The blast threw gear across the cavern, which is why the first few minutes are the two of us wandering a cave picking up a sword here, a pickaxe there, and trying to work out which pile belonged to whom. There is stuff scattered in places neither of us went, which nobody ever satisfactorily explains.

The emerald is in the lava

The search narrows to one item, and the news is bad. Emerald 1, the first of the fifty-four bonus emeralds we picked up last episode, went into the lava with everything else Basket was carrying.

Basket spends a while holding out hope, peering down holes and along ledges. There is a bow visible down there. There is flint. There is no emerald.

Scoti, to his credit, waits a long time before saying it. Then he says it. He had wanted the emeralds stashed in a chest back at the start of the level so nobody would ever be carrying one around, and he had been overruled.

The new emerald policy

Out of the wreckage comes an actual rule, and it holds for the rest of the series. From now on, when an emerald turns up, it goes straight into storage. Nobody carries one into a cave. If that means walking back through a level later to collect it, fine, that beats watching it disappear into a lava flow.

There is a nice exchange about the whole thing where Basket points out that being proven right came at a price, and asks whether the price was worth it. Scoti's answer is that being right at the top of the next episode is his favorite part.

Still no idea what the death chests do

The death chest mystery from episode one is still unsolved. We find another one, poke at it, and conclude it is just a chest. Basket's working theory is that it is an inside joke we are not in on.

Also unresolved: the magic weapon. It does half a point of damage and sets things on fire, which as Basket points out makes it mostly a very reliable way to set yourself on fire.

He then demonstrates this by trying to swim in lava. The chat log is not kind about it.

Where we finished

Gear mostly recovered, one emerald permanently down, and a storage policy nobody is going to argue with again. Fifty-three left to find, and now we know what happens if we get careless with one.
