The Floor is Lava: Untold Stories 3 Episode 12

The trap that gives this episode its name gets Basket before Scoti has even started recording, and the last thirty seconds set up something genuinely nasty.

Already going wrong

The episode opens with Basket falling and Scoti asking whether he is recording yet. He is not. Basket's advice is to focus on surviving first and worry about the footage afterwards, which is sound and also too late.

By the time the camera is running, most of Basket's inventory is gone. A couple of things survived. The rest went where the rest always goes.

A trap built out of clutter

Working out what happened takes a while, and the answer is the best bit of map design we have hit so far.

Somebody scattered a pile of junk across the floor. Your eye goes to it, you think there is something worth grabbing or something worth avoiding, you look down at your feet, and while you are doing that you walk straight off the edge.

Basket's summary: this guy is clever, and he does not like it. Followed by the lesson, delivered flatly, do not trust a cave.

Losing the fire stick

The real casualty is the enchanted weapon from episode three, the one that did half a point of damage and set things alight. It had become the fire stick, and it was the only reusable weapon either of them had.

It is gone, and the pair of them are noticeably more careful for the rest of the episode as a result. There is also an accidental sweep attack, with Basket asking whether Scoti just hit him, and Scoti admitting it is possible before switching to an axe.

Not eating the steak

A small but very Team B.S. moment: Basket nearly eats a steak he does not need. In this map food heals you directly, so eating at the wrong moment is not just waste, it is a heal you no longer have when you need one.

He catches himself, complains about his own hunger bar, and moves on. Scoti says he was not going to bring it up.

Six spawners in one place

The last minute is a witch neither of us can land an arrow on, a bat interfering, and a lot of shouting about running away.

Then the actual cliffhanger. Those spiders they have been hearing around the corner for the last few minutes are not a nest. It is six cave spider spawners stacked directly on top of each other.

We look at it, decide that is a next-time problem, and end the episode.
