Michael Deering's December 2013 challenge is called Anything Goes, and it's a team game on the GopherCraft server, hardcore mode in Minecraft 1.7.2, with three rules: no mods, no beds and nothing off camera. The team calls itself MaBaLoSco. Max_Writer and lostinthefort join in the chat in the first minute, Scoti_Garbidis walks past with a nameplate, and BasketMC rounds out the four.
A savanna, against someone's will
The world spawns everyone in a savanna. "It was against my will, a Savannah was chosen," someone says. "The people have chosen." Basket punches acacia trees with the others, crafts a wooden axe, and leaves the server for a moment and rejoins. The plan is to stay near the savanna for food. Out past the trees the ground turns red, and a voice corrects itself: "I thought it was desert. It's actually a Mesa Clay Canyon."
Basket's hole
Basket digs a shaft down near spawn, crafts a stone pickaxe in the dark at the bottom, then climbs back out and sets a furnace down on the grass. The hole becomes the team's way in. "Baskets hole is right here," someone calls while the others try to find it, and the talk turns to putting a small tower over it so whoever comes up can look around first.
Torches on the left
Down in the cave, the team settles on a house rule. "Torches on the left. Internal navigation. Everybody try to put your torches on the left." Breaking it carries a penalty: "If you don't, we won't hate you forever, but it will be an undetermined amount of time." Basket lights the passages, earns Benchmarking for a crafting table, and smothers a lava pool with dirt just as a zombie wanders up the tunnel.
Very little food
Four people and almost nothing to eat. "I've got one piece of zombie flesh." "I have nothing." "I have seeds." "There, I got pork chops cooking." A square of dirt and water goes down in the base room for a garden, and Scoti_Garbidis earns Time to Farm and then Bake Bread in the chat. "One piece of bread! Booyah!" Meanwhile someone finds gravel blocking the way out. "Somebody blocked us off." Nobody owns up: "I have not touched any gravel."
A zombie at the wall
"There are zombies outside." One gets to a gap in a dirt wall in the cave, and Scoti_Garbidis goes at it with a stone sword while Basket stands by with a stone sword too.
The end of day one
"We're getting close to the end of the first day." Basket keeps mining with a stone pickaxe near the lava, and near the end a voice says, "They're burning." Basket ends the first day alive and underground, and no death shows on screen. The end card follows, and there's no gameplay after it.
