A Farm and a Missing Ravine: MHC August 2013 Episode 4

  • Published on

The title card reads "Minecraft Hardcore Challenge August 2013," with "E04" in the corner. Basket logs back in to game show host Michael Deering's August challenge still down in the abandoned mineshaft, lost at the end of the last episode. The plan has two parts: "try and get some food established," and then go back to that ravine.

Up to the surface

The first tunnel Basket finds has some gold in it and might be the ravine, but it doesn't look big enough. "Couple of creepers," Basket notes, and moves on. Then a passage turns out to lead "up to the surface," and that settles it: food first. Back at the hideout Basket smelts some iron, makes a stone hoe and heads out into the jungle, watching for creepers near the entrance. One seed drops from the grass. Basket starts chopping trees for apples, then stops: "maybe these don't give apples actually." Swamp and oak trees do. Jungle trees probably don't.

The day's cow

Under the rules, Basket can kill one animal a day, and none has been used yet. The cow from before was off in one direction, so that's where Basket goes, and sure enough: "there's a cow. Yes, this is where I found him before." It drops two beef. "You're my cow for the day, or my animal for the day." On the way back Basket spots iron ("Ooh, iron") but has "plenty at the moment" and keeps moving so as not to lose the mineshaft.

A farm by the furnace

Basket builds the farm "right in here," next to the hideout's furnace ("It'd be more convenient that way"): dirt, a bucket of water, tilled ground and the seeds. The steak goes in to cook. Two apples are still left, but Basket eats both steaks to fill up and heal, then grabs more water. That water has a job later on: getting down into the ravine.

Going in circles

Back underground, Basket drops off gravel and other junk and sets off for the ravine. "I'm feeling like it's over this way." "Oh, I saw you, creeper. Can you get to me? Nope." Then the tunnels bring Basket right back to the start. "I just went in a big loop." Another try goes past a dead end and a mushroom and comes back to the beginning again. "Very confused. I swear I saw a big ravine." One opening drops down to more mineshaft below. "So there's a skeleton. Doesn't look very nice. There is gold." Basket passes on it.

Blocking the water

So the ravine waits. Basket deals with a stretch of flowing water using a trick picked up from other players, blocking it off instead of clearing it, and pushes into new caves. Basket hears spiders close by and closes that way off. There's more iron to grab. A viewer had suggested making a bed from string, but that's against this challenge's rules: "You have to just survive through the night."

A quiet ending

Basket sums it up: "no chests at all, and no big ravine that I was hoping for," just more iron and more food. The spider spot is quiet now, though it's "still spawning in there." Back at the furnace the new iron goes in to smelt. Basket thinks the mineshaft "might be kind of tapped out" and plans to rewatch the last episode to find the ravine.

Basket ends the day alive, with a small wheat farm planted and full on steak. The game pauses and the end card follows, with no gameplay after it.
