Day four of The Great Race!, Michael Deering's December 2014 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge. At the end of the last episode Basket asked whether to keep tunneling through the Nether or go up to the surface. Most of the answers said play to win, so the tunnel goes on. Basket also points out that progress in the Nether doesn't count until it's carried back into the Overworld.
Saving the diamond pick
Supplies are running low. Basket wants to keep some life in the diamond pickaxe so there's something to break Nether portals with later, so it stays in the inventory and iron pickaxes come out, made one at a time. Something has to go to make room, and Basket picks the flint: "I have all that gravel." Then it's back to digging east through the netherrack.
Lining up on the zero line
The race is judged on the zero line, and the tunnel has drifted a little off it. "I guess it's not actually off by very much, is it? But we'll go ahead and correct it." Basket banks around a corner to bring the tunnel back in line, and finds the route had been running very close to the bedrock at the top of the Nether. Basket's first wander around the Nether had gone "a direction I didn't think I went." The iron picks wear out one after another, and when the last one is made Basket decides that once it's used up, it's time to head for the Overworld.
A portal to the other side
Basket clears out a space for the portal with the last iron pick, places the obsidian and gets the flint and steel ready. The worry is what waits on the other side. It should be night there, and Basket is wearing only a chestplate. "If it's too crazy you might need to run back in." Then through the portal: "Am I safe? Looks like it's actually sunrise."
The portal opens onto snowy hills, very close to the zero line already. Then the sky gets darker instead of lighter. "Is it sunrise or sunset? I'm so confused." It's sunset, and the game's day counter doesn't match Basket's own count.
Digging down for iron
With night coming, Basket goes underground in a stair-step down. The goal is iron and diamonds, so the Nether trip can carry on and the portal can be reused. Basket gets hungry but remembers the mushrooms, makes a stone pick to save the good one, and throws away a furnace to free up space, since "they're pretty easy to make."
There's an idea from a viewer to think about too: getting on top of the bedrock roof of the Nether and running across it with no digging at all. It would take ender pearls, and "I might end up suffocating and dying," so Basket skips it.
Then iron, "just in time for my pick to break."
Calling it a day
The timer has run out, but the day is out of step, so Basket plays a little longer. A crafting table and a new furnace go down in the shaft, and the iron goes in to smelt.
Basket sounds hopeful about the distance east. "I hope I'm winning." The camera swings around to show Basket in the shaft.
The episode ends with Basket alive, underground in the Overworld with iron in the furnace. The credits roll after that, with no gameplay after them.
