Underground Base: MHC Island Survival Episode 2

  • Published on

Day two of Island Survival, Michael Deering's April 2014 challenge, finds Basket's eight-player GopherCraft team where day one left them: underground in an old mineshaft, staying well clear of the sea they are not allowed to touch. Basket already has an iron pickaxe and a furnace going, but food is short for everyone. The episode's edited intro replays the shipwreck, then the screen reads "DAY 2" and "Underground Base."

Fishing underground

Food is the problem from the first minute. Basket's hunger bar is down, and the voice chat is full of plans to fix it. "We need some food down here." "If we can get several fishing rods going." Someone finds water below ground: "We can fish underground. I found an underground fishing hole." Another player is not sold: "Oh no, you never want to fish underground, it's terrible." Fishing rods and a bucket of water get passed around, and melon seeds come up as the next crop.

Cave spiders and a spawner

The mineshaft fights back. "Watch your left. There's a lot of spiders." Cave spiders seem to come from somewhere nearby: "Man, we really need to take that spawner out." Basket digs through the tunnels past chest minecarts, cobwebs and lapis, and the chat shows Monster Hunter after a kill in the dark. The positional audio keeps causing trouble. "Can you hear me?" gets asked more than once, and someone sums it up: "It's tough, it's positional. You can hear people talk, but you just can't..." "Yeah, they can't always hear you depending on which way they're facing."

Rotten flesh for dinner

When Basket finally eats, it is rotten flesh, eaten next to Steel_Douglas in the new base room. The Hunger effect icon pops up right after, which is what rotten flesh does. "If we ever get enough food that we're all not hungry, that'd be awesome," someone says later.

The base and the iron

The underground base is a cave room with a dirt floor, rows of torches, chests, a bank of furnaces and a small farm with a water channel and young crops. "You need to get some wheat going so we can breed some cows." Basket types into chat, "surface dewellers, you already make armor?" and Scoti_Garbidis answers, "i have helmet and boots." Basket smelts iron and crafts a full set of iron armor and an iron sword. Steel_Douglas, Max_Writer, lostinthefort and Sayulily all pass through the room, and so does an enderman. "There's an enderman down here in our room, just be careful of him."

Treacherous territory

With armor on, Basket heads back out into the mineshaft with the others. The voice chat gets busy: "Creeper, creeper, back up!" and "There's a witch over here at the same time." In chat, optimus1971 types "was shot by a PsychoSFK," but no real death message appears. "You're on your own, Basket." "I need a partner." "Basket, don't die." "They're also dropping from up above." Basket's health slips a few hearts. "This might be too dangerous of a spot to really advance."

The team decides to save the rest for the next episode and calls it. The chat shows no deaths, so all eight are still in the game at the end of day two, with Basket in full iron armor and the underground base up and running. The credits roll after that, and nothing comes after them.
