Iron Armor and a Shield: MHC Kill the Dragon Episode 2

  • Published on

Episode 2 of Kill the Dragon, Michael Deering's December 2016 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, picks up right where day one stopped: at the edge of the new cave under the village. Basket didn't have a timer running this time and only works out a few minutes in that day one is already over. "Welcome to episode two everybody."

Creepers in the pit

The first job is making the cave safe. Basket walls off one side "so that nothing can come from that direction" and checks that the tunnel is a dead end. The cave opens into a bigger room, and there's the water Basket heard at the end of day one. A couple of creepers wander around in a pit below. Rather than fight them up close, Basket blocks the way up "so they can't get up to me" and deals with them from above. "Okay, they're dead. Good."

Lava, gold and redstone

Deeper in, Basket builds a second furnace to cook iron on the way through and pick it up on the way back. There's lava, then gold. "Gold, so it must be pretty low." Redstone and lapis turn up too. The gold and the redstone need an iron pickaxe, so Basket goes back for more iron and makes one. A few zombies are stuck below, unable to reach the ledge. "I feel like those zombies are grumpy, they can't get to me."

Basket also fills a bucket with lava, "for killing dudes without having to really mess with them too much." Digging on, a little lava breaks out of a wall. There's a whole lava lake behind it, saved for later.

A full set of iron

By Basket's guess at the recording time, night is falling on day two. Back at the furnace, the iron turns into leggings and a helmet. "So full set of iron armor, iron sword, iron stuff, we have a lava bucket for combat." Basket grabs some gravel too, since flint for arrows will matter later.

Skeletons and a shield

Exploring further, Basket runs into a skeleton and realizes what's missing. "You know, one of those things they're really good at preventing skeleton damage. A shield." So Basket backtracks to the furnace and makes one. "Now we have some protection. Good. Because those skeletons are real mean."

A zombie walking out of a dark cave passage, arms raised

The next passage has a zombie and a couple of skeletons. "They are very brutal." Basket picks up the iron that's in reach, because "eventually I want anvils and stuff like that," then blocks the passage off and heads back toward the base.

Back to the library

The ladder leads up into the library house. It's still night. Looking out through the window, Basket counts "lots of bad guys out there" and sees that some crops have grown. The iron goes into the chest. Then Basket goes back down and mines cobblestone until morning, for fences and walls later. "Not the most glamorous thing."

While mining, Basket thinks through the road to the dragon: a sugarcane farm for trading with the villagers, then the Nether, a fortress, Nether wart and potions, killing endermen, and finding the stronghold. "Wow, there's a lot of... this is gonna be a long challenge."

Day two ends with Basket back up in the library house in daylight, alive, in a full set of iron armor with a shield. The credits roll after that, with no gameplay after them.
