First Diamonds: MHC Kill the Dragon Episode 3

  • Published on

Episode 3 of Kill the Dragon, Michael Deering's December 2016 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, starts in the morning in the library house. Basket sorts the chest first, holding on to the zombie flesh because it "might be useful for trades," and makes a note to build a clock later. Then it's out into the village to see what's there.

A creeper in the village

A creeper is wandering between the houses. "I want to kill this creeper before he has a chance to cause a lot of problems." Basket isn't sure about jump crits yet ("Haven't quite mastered my combat in this yet") but gets it done. A walk around turns up villagers, "at least a Cleric," and a librarian out in the open.

Basket makes an iron axe and chops trees at the edge of the village, leaving the tops hanging. "Usually going to drive me crazy, but in this case I don't care."

Looking for a spawner

A zombie turns up under the trees, then another. Two zombies don't prove anything. "People always assume that it's a spawner if there's, like, two zombies. But they spawn in, sometimes, packs of four." Still, a spawner would be handy, so Basket goes looking. A cave nearby has a skeleton in it ("Oh, you shot me that time, what a jerk") and some iron, but the zombie noise is coming from somewhere else.

Basket follows the sound and digs down, saying it's about to be night and it's time to get back to base. Then the tunnel opens on a crowd of zombies around a torch. "Are you guys a spawner? Or are you just a gigantic cluster of dudes?" No spawner shows up. Basket fights through them and a spider. "So he didn't drop string."

A clock and a shaft

The sky is red by the time Basket comes back up, and it's dark in the village on the walk home. Inside the library house the loot goes into the chest, and Basket makes the clock, "so we can try and get our episodes on track." With not much wood left, Basket digs a shaft straight down instead, watching for any opening below. "All of a sudden I fall into a gigantic ravine and I die" is the thing to avoid.

Diamonds at the bottom

Near bedrock, Basket starts a branch mine in a new direction, taking coal along the way for trading and for the levels enchanting will need. Then the achievement pops up in chat: diamonds. "Diamonds, yay! So that was five diamonds, so we have enough for the enchanting table." Obsidian still needs lava, and the village libraries don't have enough books for a full set of bookshelves yet.

Watching the clock

Basket keeps mining and keeps the debug screen open to track the day this time, after forgetting on days one and two. Furnaces go down along the tunnel to cook iron on the way. "The rest of this episode is going to be mostly just branch mining, but it's an important part of the process." Basket wonders out loud whether anyone will kill the dragon before the month is out.

By the clock, the day is over. "Either way this is the end of the day." The episode ends with Basket alive, deep in the branch mine in iron armor with a torch, and the end card follows with no gameplay after it.
