Blaze Rods: MHC Kill the Dragon Episode 6

  • Published on

Episode 6 of Kill the Dragon, Michael Deering's December 2016 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, starts back in the cave beside the chest. The portal Basket started taking apart last time is standing again, and the flint and steel comes out. The fortress search is still on, but this time Basket has a better idea of where to look. "I had actually walked right past where it was."

Look down, not around

Before heading through, Basket sorts the chest and turns some wheat into bread. "We don't want to waste too much time thinking about all this stuff." A crafting table comes along too. Then it's back through the purple glow to where the last trip ended, with a new plan: "look down instead of look around." It turns out Basket had been standing higher up than it seemed. "Apparently I was higher up in the air than I thought I was."

The fortress at last

Basket follows the old route along the netherrack ridges. Zombie pigmen stand around without moving, and an enderman walks past. "Oh yeah, Enderman, right?" The goal is blaze rods, enough to make eyes of ender, and maybe a strength potion as well. Basket keeps clear of trouble on the way. "There's no reason to get in combat with them." Then the fortress comes into view. "There it is, right there." Basket digs into the wall to get inside.

Inside the nether brick halls

The halls are dark, and Basket takes them slowly. "I'm being very cautious. This is fairly a dangerous spot here." Openings get blocked and side passages get sealed. "I like to just make the intersection safe." One room holds a patch of nether wart growing on soul sand, and Basket gathers it. A chest in another room has a saddle, some gold and a diamond. "Oh, diamonds. Nice."

First blazes, no rods

Lower down, Basket meets the first blazes and tries to get hits in through holes poked in the wall. One goes down and leaves nothing behind. "No blaze rods. What a jerk." Then Basket spots where they're coming from. "I think there's a spawner right over there."

A trap under the spawner

Basket digs in underneath the spawner, closes off the tunnel behind, and starts building what Basket calls a "very quick, mostly safe little farm." The idea is for blazes to drop down into the space and get stuck where Basket can reach them. They shoot fireballs the whole time. "Don't shoot me." Basket crafts a spare axe and fights with an axe to avoid hitting a zombie pigman by accident.

The first rod lands, and the "Into Fire" achievement shows up in chat. Basket sets a target. "So I guess I'm going to aim for getting 8. Is 8 overkill?" Every kill brings in some XP too.

Four rods and counting

Basket keeps widening the walls and opening single blocks so more blazes fall in. One dies without dropping anything, and the rods come slowly. A look in the inventory near the end shows four blaze rods, along with the nether wart and the diamond.

The episode ends with Basket alive in the fortress, still working the spawner and hoping to collect the rest of the rods next time. The end card follows with no gameplay after it.
