Iron Armor and a Dungeon: MHC Lorax Challenge Episode 2

  • Published on

Day two of the Lorax Challenge, Michael Deering's September 2014 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, where trees and leaves are off limits and the only animals anyone may eat are fish and zombies. Basket starts where day one ended: down in the abandoned mineshaft with a pile of unsmelted iron ore, plenty of coal and no food. Scoti Garbidis is back as a guest voice on the call, playing the same seed in a separate world.

Four furnaces at once

The four furnaces from last episode are up against the tunnel wall now, stacked two by two next to the crafting table, and the iron ore goes in with coal underneath. The first ingots become a bucket, then an iron sword and an iron pickaxe. By the next look at the inventory, Basket is wearing a full set of iron armor. "I'm not gonna use up all my iron in case I forgot to do something," someone on the call says, and some of the ingots stay in the inventory.

Living on rotten flesh

Basket's hearts are full, but the hunger bar is close to empty all episode. With every animal but fish and zombies ruled out, food means zombies, and Basket eats rotten flesh in the tunnels. The bucket comes back full of lava. A zombie and a creeper wander the corridors, and somewhere along the way the plan on the call changes: "This turned from build a castle to do not get murderized by a bunch of random stuff."

A food generator made of lava

Then Basket starts building with the lava. A gap behind the mineshaft fences gets walled up with cobblestone, and lava goes down beside a cobblestone pillar. "I blocked off the other side of the spawner," goes the line on the call, and soon after, "Thank you, Mister Zombie Flesh."

The planks of the mineshaft are wood, and they catch. "The mineshaft burns pretty well," the call reports, and then, "I've got a little bit of a food generator now."

Creepers on the rails

The rest of the night goes into the tunnels, mining coal and iron along the old rails. Creepers keep turning up between the supports. The advice on the call is to look up when walking through the intersections, so nothing drops on anyone's head. Basket's experience level climbs from 5 to 14 over the episode.

A spider at the door

Near the end, the talk on the call is about the sun coming up. Basket digs through to a room of mossy cobblestone with a spider in the doorway and goes at it with the iron sword. Behind it is a dungeon: a monster spawner and a chest. "Torches, quick." Basket turns the camera around for a third-person look, standing behind the chest and the spawner in full iron.

"You find those melon seeds yet?" comes over the call. "Maybe." The chest isn't opened on screen, the melon farm and the castle haven't started, and Basket is alive with full hearts and a nearly empty hunger bar when the credits roll. Nothing comes after them.
