Settling In: MHC Mission Impossible Episode 6

  • Published on

Day six of Mission Impossible, Michael Deering's January 2014 challenge, picks up in the stronghold with three players left: Basket, Max_Writer and lostinthefort, both named by their nameplates in the first minute. The plan is short. "We'll do a little bit more, tiny bit more exploration, and then build our base, build our mushroom room."

Who remembers how we got here?

Food is still the worry, since passive mobs are off limits. "We need to have food growing, and we could turn this room into a garden for wheat. Did anybody get the seeds?" Nobody is sure. A lot of supplies, wood included, sit in a chest back near where the team broke in, and nobody remembers the way. Pillaring up gets floated and turned down. One player heads back alone: "I'm gonna try to go back and just empty that chest up above." On the way there is a quick check on the torches. "Have you been putting torches on the right or the left?" "I've been trying to put them just on the floor." "Well, it's better than the wrong side." Then the good news: "I found one of the chests that we left behind." "Seeds, I got the seeds." "Oh, here's a wooden hoe. Perfect."

The mushroom room

Basket digs a square pit in the floor of a stone brick room. A silverfish wriggles out of the stone at the bottom, and Basket's iron sword makes short work of it. A red mushroom goes into the pit, and a bit of bone meal gets it growing. Before long the room holds giant red and brown mushrooms. "I've got twenty reds and thirty browns." Basket chops into the caps with a stone axe, and lostinthefort works nearby.

Remembering Steel_Douglas

The loss from last time still hangs over the team. "Steel Douglas died. I want to put down a poppy." Later the mood turns reflective: "We made it to the stronghold. We survived, most of us." "We lost Steel Douglas. We got stuck in a door." "We can make a little memorial to him."

Moving in

The rest is housekeeping. Chests go down for storage, including a large chest. Basket clears cobwebs out of a library. Someone says they are "one diamond short" of enchanting. Another notes, "We have three pet creepers. How long do you think they'll stay before they despawn?" Someone also points out that beds are not allowed, one of the month's rules. The chat shows Max_Writer earning the Benchmarking achievement.

Out for coal

Basket tunnels out of the stronghold into plain stone, looking for coal. A zombie comes down the tunnel and meets the iron sword, and Basket stops to eat mushroom stew. Water turns up ahead. "There's a river in front of me as I'm getting the coal. I don't want something to flood." A little farther on: "Ooh, nice big cave."

Calling it

Time runs short. "Wait, is the daylight out?" Nobody is sure. "We probably should call this episode then." Basket heads for a safe spot in the cave and ends day six alive, with no death lines in the chat this time. After the end card, a few more seconds of the cave play, with a player standing by the water and one last exchange: "You wanna kill the server?" "Yeah, kill it."
