Diamonds and a Spawner: MHC Zero Chunk Episode 2

  • Published on

Day two of The Zero Chunk Challenge, Michael Deering's March 2015 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, where Basket, technascribe, MomofMiners and Frank_n_Honest have to live inside one chunk and can only place blocks there. Breakfast is sorted before anyone asks: "There's a bunch of soup in the chest."

String for fishing poles

A skeleton is hiding under the trees and a spider sits up in one. "They always hide under the trees." The spiders pay out in string: "I killed a couple more and got three more strings so we can make a bow." "Well, we can make two fishing poles. Double our efforts in fishing." The point is leather, because leather means books and books mean an enchanting table. Fishing has already turned up a surprise: "mine's an unbreaking three, power four bow that I got fishing."

Lucky chickens

Teammates line up along the water with their rods. A chicken floats in the pond next to them, and it gets promoted to lucky charm. "Mr. Chicken, you're my only friend out here." "Lucky chicken, lucky, lucky." The fish come in, but not the thing they want: "I've got nine fish, but no... I just want some leather."

Closing the fence

Basket goes back to the project from the first night. "I realize how much wood it's gonna take, but I figured we could finish off this project." That means more spruce cut down, more fence crafted, and the line carried around the base, with cobblestone blocks set by the fence where the team needs to hop over to the lake. "Basket, are you putting jump blocks?" Basket also bakes bread on the way, earning the Bake Bread achievement, and turns charcoal into torches for the fence posts. By dusk, "the perimeter is in place." A zombie tests it right away. "I've attracted a zombie, so we'll see if he can figure out a path to me." It can't.

Down past the lagoon

At night Basket heads underground. "I stair-stepped it past the little pond." Frank_n_Honest and technascribe are already working in the caves below, and MomofMiners turns up a little later. Basket smelts iron in a furnace down there, and then a spider drops in. Basket takes a hit, swings back, and next to the fight there's diamond ore in the wall. "Diamond! Yeah, four of them. Holy smoke." The F3 screen comes up around the ore, since the standard rules ask entrants to show where their diamonds are.

A spawner and a chest

The spider was not alone. "There's a spider spawner." It sits in a small dungeon room with a chest beside it, and torches go in to light it up. "Maybe that'll light it up enough." "In the chest, there's two name tags, horse armor, a saddle, and some redstone." Someone offers Basket an iron sword ("You want an iron sword?" "Sure."), and it shows up in Basket's inventory. "You've got the diamonds, Basket."

The underground hot tub

Back near the cave pool, Basket cooks salmon in a furnace and gets the Delicious Fish achievement. The team agrees to meet "in the lagoon to say our goodbyes" before the day turns over. "Join us in the hot tub." "We're here in our jacuzzi underground."

All four players are alive at the end of the day, with no death on screen. The end credits follow, with no gameplay after them.
