Episode 5 of Zombie Life, Michael Deering's July 2015 Minecraft Hardcore Challenge, and the last episode of the month. The rules haven't changed: eat only zombie flesh, kill villagers, craft only wooden things, and break nothing but dirt, gravel, sand and coal ore, with the village to fix up in the end. pulse2010 and Scoti_Garbidis are both gone, so Basket plays on alone, still on half a heart, in an iron chestplate, with the hunger bar almost empty.
Out on the savanna
The day starts in the tall grass with one goal. "Alright, I gotta try and find some zombies." The time of day works against it. "I'm guessing this won't last for long because now it's day." The food situation is just as bad. "Pretty low on food. I gotta find a cave, I guess." Zombies are the only meal the rules allow, and a cave is where they might be. "I need a cave. I can go in there, maybe kill a zombie."
Voices from the dirt box
The other voices on the call are still there, even with their runs over. One of them reports that a spider "is like dancing around my grave right now." Another line sums up how it feels to be out of the game: "I'm just in the little dirt box, being told that I cannot respawn." The advice for Basket is short. "Don't die." "I will attempt not to die."
A cave that's too small
A gap in the ground turns up first. "Is this a cave? Yes. Okay, adventure time." It's a little stone pocket with coal ore in the walls and a torch on the floor, and no zombies. Basket climbs back out onto the grass and keeps walking. The plains have sheep and cows, but passive mobs are off limits and the rules say zombie flesh only. "Oh, caves, whatever. Stupid plains."
Down the stream
The next hole goes deeper. "Maybe this is the cave. Yes." Half a heart leaves no room for a fall. "You have to be very careful. The slightest misstep." The stone rule closes off the easy way. "I can't mine any of this stuff." Basket finds a way down anyway, "Oh, I can stair-step," and follows a stream of water deeper into the dark. A new line shows up in chat, "Mini_Scoti joined the game," and a little later a voice on the call says, "Now I'm in your eyes. Your eyes are my eyes."
Game over
Basket ends up underwater in the dark, with the air bubbles showing. "I gotta swim out of this." The hunger bar is empty, and health is still at half a heart. Then chat shows it: "BasketMC starved to death." The game over screen follows, with "You cannot respawn in hardcore mode!"
That's the end of Basket's run, and with it the last of the team. No grave got built for anyone, and the village they set out to fix up never got its repairs. There's a quick goodbye on the call, "Thanks for watching, everybody," and then the credits run to the end of the video with no gameplay after them.
