Zombie Grinder and City Plots: GopherCraft SMP S2 Episode 1

  • Published on

Season 2 starts in a new Minecraft 1.8 world. Basket arrives on grass among birch trees with an empty hotbar, surrounded by the nameplates of pikerize, Steel_Douglas and Scoti_Garbidis. Chat fills up fast: kolumi joins, Scoti_Garbidis types "welcome," and kolumi answers "woot woot! Gophercraft 2.0!" Chat shows everyone earning Taking Inventory, then Getting Wood.

The first spawner

Underground, Basket mines diamonds and gets the DIAMONDS! achievement while chat shows Scoti_Garbidis, pikerize, cupp2000 and lostinthefort joining. Around a corner sits a monster spawner. Torches go down, and the narration confirms it: "Yes, it is a zombie spawner." The chest holds gold horse armor and gunpowder. A voice wonders if the spot is inside the spawn area, and they decide it is. In chat, kolumi reports "pants and boots from the same zombie!"

A grinder and a spawn town

"Some time has passed, a few days," the narration says, and the spawner is now a zombie grinder, with a small base of furnaces and chests next to it. Nobody claims land yet: the plan is a spawn town with people's plots around the outside and commercial plots inside. On the surface, roads run out in four directions, and the outer wall is unfinished on the east side. The middle of spawn holds the enchanting setup and the chests everyone shares for now.

Lapis and cheap repairs

Basket crafts diamond tools. In 1.8, the anvil repair of a diamond pickaxe costs 3 levels, "where it used to be like 33." Enchanting now takes lapis lazuli too. The pickaxe gets Efficiency IV. A diamond shovel comes out with Efficiency IV, Unbreaking III and Fortune III, and Fortune means gravel will drop "a whole bunch of flint." One more enchant needs level 30, so it waits.

The subway

The future town hall will have a subway in its basement. Ladders lead down to stone brick tunnels with rails, meant to run 300 blocks in each direction to more stations. Digging them also gave stone for the town wall. A rail duplicator fills a large chest with powered rails, "a little bit cheaty, but we're going to go with it." The Nether stays off limits until the town hall portal is ready.

Picking plots

At the lake, signs stand in the water, one reading "Plot #27, This Plot, 30 x 64." Players wait in the water while a voice says they "just gotta press the button." Chat shows optimus1971, Th3pooka, Gopherboy, Sudocomm, pikerize, PsychoSFK and Scoti_Garbidis coming and going. A voice checks that the ground across the road is not part of the plot ("correct"), then the narration says "this is my plot" over a wide, sloped pit cut into the grass. The plan is a round tower that mostly goes down into the ground, with a bedroom floor high enough to see the lake and a mound for the front door.

The narration adds that the Nether is now unlocked, so with comparators in hand the subway comes first next episode. The episode ends at night with Basket's character beside the plot, then the end card runs to the last frame.
