Coppersmith: GopherCraft TerraFirmaCraft Episode 4

  • Published on

A title card reads "GopherCraft TerraFirmaCraft Season 1, Episode 4, Coppersmith" over Basket's caveman character. It's a rainy day on the server, and Basket has a plan: make a saw, and maybe other tools, so work can start on a house "so we can have some shelter."

A clay mold for a saw

Basket has just enough copper for one tool. The mold comes first. With clay, Basket explains, "you want to make space inside of it where the metal, the hot metal will go," and shapes a Clay Saw Mold, then a couple of extra vessels so the fire isn't wasted. Everything goes into the pit with straw and logs, and the Fire Starter lights it. While it burns, Basket points out that a knife on tall grass gives straw. Basket had been rationing straw, thinking crops were the only source.

When the fire is done, the vessel's tooltip reads Copper, 100 Units. Basket pours it into the mold, breaks the saw blade out, adds a stick, and has a Copper Saw. Pine logs go in with it and come out as planks.

Panning and a copper pick

Next comes gold panning with a pan made from a regular bowl. It takes a lot of right-clicking, and Basket stops "before I gave up and got bored." The haul shows up in tooltips: Native Platinum Nugget, Native Copper Nugget, Native Gold Nugget and Small Hematite. That is enough for one more pour. Basket fires clay molds for a pick, a prospector's pick and a sword, then casts a Copper Pickaxe to try on a spot Basket suspects is copper.

Copper under the base

It is. Basket digs down and finds stone streaked red, and the pieces come out as Native Copper. Some time later a vessel's tooltip lists four lines of 16x Native Copper, with more lying on the surface nearby. "This is right next to my spot," Basket says.

More copper than expected

Short on space, Basket turns planks into a crafting bench and then a chest. Then a test: ten pieces of the mined copper in one vessel. The tooltip reads Copper, 250 Units. "10 of those things is equal to more than I thought," Basket says. An achievement pops up, Chalcolithic. A scythe mold takes part of the batch, and Basket isn't sure what happens to the rest. Night falls while Basket lays a stone foundation for the house by torchlight and makes some glass for future windows.

A wall of tools

The pit kiln finishes with a big batch of copper, and the tooltip number drops as Basket fills molds: axes, picks, saws, scythes and a prospector's pick. Each head has to be pulled out of its mold before Basket can make the next tool. Two achievements show up, Time to Mine! (finally) and Carpenter. "I wonder why I didn't get the achievement before," Basket says.

The tools go on racks along a plank wall inside the house, because "you can't actually put these tools inside chests," as Basket puts it.

Plans for the house

Basket ends the episode inside the half-built house. Next up is more wood for the floor, maybe a second floor or a root cellar for food, and a fireplace or the pit kiln in one corner. Basket also wants cows and pigs for leather armor, since the caveman is "still naked, sort of." A last shot shows the caveman standing among the plank walls and log posts before the end card.
