Ice Tray: Inversion Server Episode 5

  • Published on

"In this episode we're gonna build an ice tray," Basket says at the start. The dome over Basketopia is going to be ice instead of glass, and the first tray, at the end of the last episode, "didn't work very well." So this one starts from scratch in the ice biome, with a video Basket looked up open on the side and a plan to follow it only roughly.

A new foundation

The episode opens on a small stone platform in the ocean, next to a Nether portal and a stack of chests, and then moves to a frozen lake ringed with snowy spruce trees. The first surprise is a tool: "my ice breaking shovel no longer really does what I want it to do," Basket says. "You actually need a pick now."

The tray gets a stone brick border three blocks wide around a 15 by 15 space where the ice will form. Basket counts it out from one corner and hopes for the best, then puts wood on the bottom so the tray can be lit up without monsters spawning in it.

Gates for the water

Water comes in along two sides. A row of sticky pistons on each side pulls blocks down to let it through, and a lever works them. Basket explains the choice of sticky pistons over dispensers: there are plenty of sticky pistons in storage and not much to load a dispenser with. A spider gets into the build partway through.

Redstone that almost works

Most of the session is wiring. The signal will not carry to the pistons, so Basket switches to repeaters ("I think I only need 30"), then finds the line is still too short and crafts two more. "Almost works," comes before "This block doesn't get powered." Eventually a test fires the whole row: "Does that do the whole line? It does, sweet."

Chat gets busy in the middle of it. TheSportsfreak joins and types "hello," and Basket answers "Heyas!" Later EPiC_HERO_NBK joins, trades a few short lines with Basket, and leaves again.

An hour of footage, cut

With the channels full of water and covered in slabs, the recording skips ahead. Basket explains that building the rest took "about an hour's worth of footage" of figuring out the redstone, so the episode gives a tour instead. Under the tray, sticky pistons push wooden pegs up through the water so every block of it touches something solid, which is what makes it freeze. The signal travels down diagonal rows of them. Wherever a 2x2 gap was left, Basket filled it with a solid block so spiders could not spawn inside.

There is one known flaw. The water switch and the piston switch are on opposite sides, so ice sometimes forms over a peg before it rises, and the peg just lifts it into "a floating block of ice."

Watching it freeze

The view moves high above the tray for a sped-up shot. Water fills the square around a grid of wooden pegs, and pale patches of ice spread across it until the whole surface is frozen.

The first harvest

The last shot shows the ice coming up block by block from one corner, uncovering a wooden plank floor underneath. Most of the floor is clear and a small patch of ice is left when the view cuts to the end card, which runs to the end of the video.
