Up to the Desert: GopherCraft UHC S1 Episode 5

  • Published on

The team cards and the "Season One GopherCraft UHC" title roll, and Episode 5 starts back in the ravine base at the 80 minute mark. Nobody on the call is sure which episode this is. "I lost count." The plan is to empty the chest, take what's worth keeping and finally head for the surface.

One last round of enchanting

Before leaving, the team runs the new diamond swords through the enchanting table. Basket's comes out with Unbreaking I, and the tooltip puts it at +7 attack damage. Basket's iron sword with Sharpness I reads +7.25. "So the sharpness iron sword right now that I have is seven point two five, and then my diamond sword is a seven. How does that work?" Nobody has a good answer.

Talk turns to golden apples: one "fills two" hearts, and absorption adds "another two fake hearts" for two minutes. lostinthefort works beside a pool of lava while the others pack up.

Daylight

The way out is a staircase and then a shovel straight up through dirt. "We should be careful when we're coming up. Somebody might be lying in wait for us." Nobody is. Basket breaks through into grass and sky, and the team decides to head east and hug the wall, so at least one side can't be attacked.

There are pigs right away, which means pork chops, and a spider that stays calm in daylight until somebody hits it. It drops string, the thing they need most, since enough string means more bows.

A desert by the wall

The grass gives way to a desert running along the dark wall at the edge of the map. There is talk of exploring it, maybe finding a village, but it's getting dark. "It's gonna get hostile real quick here." So they dig into a sandstone cliff instead. Sandstone was the point: sand would fall on them, sandstone stays put. Once inside, Basket crafts a bow, and the arrows get split up.

Bad news in chat

Inside the hideout, Basket opens the Tab list: BasketMC at 72, lostinthefort at 88, PsychoSFK at 92. Elsewhere, TopStiGearGaming is down at 11 and derpguru at 20. A moment later chat reads "Steel_Douglas was blown up by Creeper," and the "gg" lines follow, "gg :(" from BasketMC among them. Just before, Scoti_Garbidis had typed "i am so alone." Later optimus1971 types "c-ya" and leaves the game. "Did he die too?" "No, he didn't die. He just left."

Gearing up for the Nether

The question now is the Nether. "If we go into the Nether, there's probably going to be... it's going to link up to somebody else's portal." Basket has flint and steel and obsidian in the inventory, but making the portal means committing to it.

So the night goes to prep. Basket crafts a golden apple out of gold ingots and an apple and eats it. An anvil goes down beside the enchanting table. Sharpness books are the wish ("what I really want is the sharpness books"), but Basket's own rolls at the table give Efficiency, Aqua Affinity and Protection. Basket's iron leggings end up with Protection I, and the pork chops cook until everyone has plenty.

In chat, derpguru types "derp is lonely and scared," and Scoti_Garbidis answers "me too."

The team decides the Nether can wait for the next episode. Basket blocks in a corner of the hideout, the screen goes dark, and the credits roll. Basket is alive, in the desert hideout with lostinthefort and PsychoSFK.
