A Base Under Spawn: GopherCraft UHC S4 Episode 4

  • Published on

Episode 4 opens on the "GopherCraft UHC Season IV" title and the four team cards, then drops back into the cave where the team has been collecting lava. Basket closes up an open lava pit, and the bucket plan from last time gets sorted out: there are 10 buckets between them, and three full of lava go to FriarNurgle "for defense." The rest end up as six water buckets.

Packing up the hideout

It is day, and the team agrees this is the time to move. They break the melons they planted rather than leave anything behind ("We don't want to give anyone a..."), check the furnaces, and count seven gold. A quick health check finds one of them two and a half hearts down. Then they head southeast toward spawn, trying to sneak where they can.

Across the desert

Sneaking the whole way turns out to be too slow, so they walk in the open across a desert and keep their eyes on the mobs. "If there's mobs, that means there's a player nearby." Sayulily's nameplate shows 15 health on the way.

In a forest past the desert they find pigs, a horse and rabbits. "Do you get leather from rabbits?" Yes, and leather means books. "Don't kill the horse!" Soon there is enough leather. In chat, Scoti_Garbidis teases TChels, and TChels answers with ":D".

Sealed in sandstone

A teammate finds a sandstone cave "pretty much directly under spawn" and wants to seal it with sand so "no one would be the wiser." They move in. The password, someone announces, is "Open Sesame." A baby zombie wandering in gives one of them a scare: "I thought it was a person."

There is also a firm warning about lava buckets near the crafting table: right-click the wrong block and "you're gonna kill us."

Enchanting

With the obsidian, the leather and 14 lapis split three ways, the enchanting table goes up. The team has 10 diamonds left and votes for diamond swords. Someone explains the trick of swapping a different item into the table to change which enchantments are offered. The results are modest: Sharpness I on a diamond sword, Efficiency, and Projectile Protection and Aqua Affinity on armor. Four diamonds are left over, and there is a short debate about diamond boots.

Digging down for the portal

The plan now is to dig below the base and put the Nether portal underground. One teammate digs ahead with a fast pick while another hands down 30 ladders. The shaft breaks into a cave, the ladders fall in, and zombies and a skeleton show up while they get them back. Basket faces a zombie in the cave with a diamond sword in hand. They wall off the cave and build a false floor instead.

Someone asks how their nameplate looks through the blocks. "I can see ya." It is "about the best we can get."

Who goes first

The obsidian frame goes in at the bottom of the ladder shaft, and someone has flint and steel. Nobody knows if the other side is trapped, so the one with the lowest health offers to go first as the "test dummy," and first hands over the diamond sword and the rest of the gear so none of it is lost.

The episode cuts there, on a server message: "*** 80 Minutes ***" and the list of current players. Eleven players are listed, BasketMC, FriarNurgle and Sayulily among them. Nobody is shown stepping through. Basket is alive and standing at the foot of the shaft.
