Oaky Fanoaky Swamp Story: A Captive Minecraft 4 Bonus

  • Published on

Not an episode, and not even Minecraft. This is 45 seconds of hand-drawn cartoon, and it is the storytime tangent from Episode 32 turned into an actual animation.

What actually happens

A woman is introduced with an arrow and a label: mom's friend. Then the label gets more specific, mom's friend from Europe, and she picks up a cup of coffee. She goes to Oaky Fanoaky Swamp, where a wooden sign marks the spot and a green alligator is already waiting off to the side. The name on the sign is a phonetic run at the Okefenokee Swamp, which is a real place and, as it turns out, a real story.

Then it gets worse for everybody. A red arrow points down a corridor absolutely lined with snakes, helpfully captioned “these are sneks,” and a small figure walks straight into it. Scoti shrugs. Somebody sprints away with three snakes in pursuit. There is a close-up of a very pleased-looking snake, and that is the end of the story.

The story behind it

It is a genuine childhood memory. Basket was five or six, the family took a vacation to Florida, and a friend of his mom's came along from Europe. One of the stops was the Okefenokee Swamp, and to reach the room where they were showing a film you had to walk down a corridor with something like twenty tanks lining both sides, full of snakes. Some with rattles, some with hoods, most of them, in his words, just lying there being like “I am a snake.”

Mom's friend hated snakes. She got partway in, went the color of the wall, and sprinted back out. She never did see the film.

What set the whole tangent off was the map: the crew had just walked through a hallway of watching heads in the Darkness challenge, and the look on that woman's face thirty-odd years ago was exactly how the heads made them feel.

Where it came from

The audio is lifted straight out of that storytime tangent in the middle of the finale, and the animation plays inside that episode too, about eighteen minutes in. It went up separately as its own short, which is why it sits at the end of the Captive Minecraft 4 playlist looking like a thirty-third episode.

It is not one. The series proper ends at Episode 32. Think of this as the credits sting.
