Red Herring: Captive Minecraft 4 Episode 6

  • Published on

We're back underground, poking at the edges of the border and trying to work out which lava-soaked tunnels actually lead somewhere. This one is all about noise, near-misses, and chests that turn out to be a total tease.

A polar bear that will not shut up

The episode opens with us hunting for a way forward through a wall of lava, and there's a soundtrack: a polar bear somewhere just past the border, growling loud enough that one of us jokes it sounds like a record stuck on a loop of polar bear noises. We figure a polar bear is usually harmless unless it's guarding a cub, so we try to tune it out, but the constant roaring keeps us on edge while we try to pin down where the border actually runs.

Draining lava the slow way

Most of the early progress comes from mining, and the lava does not make it easy. We dig around old lava pockets, pull source blocks, and one of us sets up a little drain to clear a path. There's iron and coal to show for it, plus a sword that gets so beat up it ends up chucked straight into the lava. Every few blocks there's a zombie or a creeper on the other side of the wall to keep things tense.

Scoti just wants to look cool

The best tangent of the episode has nothing to do with Minecraft. Scoti gets going on headphones versus earbuds, admits the iPhone earbuds make his ears hurt, and confesses the real reason he cares: he wants to look cool on the webcam when he's streaming, like Basket and Zisteau do. Basket does his best impression of the calm "recording voice" everyone puts on for a stream versus how they actually talk in real life.

A room full of creepers and a spawner that won't spawn

Digging deeper turns up a room packed with creepers, a few zombie villagers, and a pile of clay sitting right next to more lava. The creepers keep wedging themselves in front of each other so it's hard to land a hit, but the border keeps them at arm's length. We also find a zombie spawner that just sits there doing nothing, and realize it's because the spawner is outside the border, so it never actually runs. Handy to know.

Red herrings and a spider standoff

Then come the chests. A few of them sit just out of reach past the border, close enough to see and impossible to grab, and one of us dubs them "red herring" chests, which is where the episode gets its name. That kicks off a genuinely great debate about whether a red herring is a fish or a bird (it's a fish). The rest of the run gets spent trying to lure spiders across the border to kill them for string without getting hit, which is trickier than it sounds when you can't place a block through the wall.

We wrap up with a skeleton, a creeper, and a zombie all lurking just below, and call it there for next time.
