The End: Captive Minecraft 4 Episode 20

  • Published on

We finally step through the portal into The End to take on the Ender Dragon in this episode of Release the B.S. It goes about as smoothly as you'd expect from Team B.S., which is to say there is purple dragon's breath everywhere and nobody can find a pumpkin.

Into The End

Right off the bat there's a problem: no pumpkins. In Minecraft a carved pumpkin on your head lets you look at an Enderman without making it angry, and we have zero of them. So the plan is to charge into The End half-blind, try not to make eye contact with the Endermen, and hope for the best.

We also have to relocate our old loot from a previous death, which is buried somewhere out on the island. The dragon is already circling before we're really ready.

A Very Messy Dragon Fight

This is not a clean, textbook Ender Dragon kill. The dragon's breath is everywhere, coating the pillars and the middle of the island in pools of purple that chip away at our health. Arrows run low fast, and there's a lot of shouting about who has how many left and whether fancy armor even helps against the dragon (it doesn't reduce the damage the way we'd hoped).

At one point one of us gets knocked clean off the edge and into the void, dropping their gear into the abyss right along with them. A big chunk of the fight is just trying to grab loot back, share bows and swords, and get up onto a pillar to line up a decent shot at the dragon's head, which turns out to be the only spot that reliably does damage.

Knocking Out the End Crystals

The reason the fight drags is the End crystals sitting on top of the obsidian pillars. As long as they're up, the dragon keeps healing itself, so every time we wear it down it just tops back up. You can tell when one is feeding the dragon because a beam connects the crystal to it.

So the job becomes climbing the pillars and picking the crystals off one at a time, which is easier said than done while dodging dragon's breath and trying not to aggro the Endermen standing around. Once enough crystals are gone, the dragon finally stops bouncing back to full and the health bar starts actually going down.

Dragon Down: Egg, Head, and 40 Achievements

After a lot of near-misses and one heroic "same arrow, same time" hit, the dragon goes down for good. The reward is the classic End loot: the dragon egg pops out automatically, and there's a dragon head to grab too. On the Captive Minecraft side, the kill pushes us to 40 achievements unlocked, which is what keeps the world border growing.

There's a running joke about reading the credits for the rest of the episode, plus a genuine "we're kind of bad at this game" admission after how long the fight took. Fair enough.

Next Up: The Overkill

With the dragon dead, we pull up the achievement list to figure out what's next. The remaining goals involve the Wither, including one we nickname the "overkill" that means killing a whole bunch of them. There's talk of using a looting-and-infinity setup to make that easier, and a note that you sadly can't spawn the Wither in The End, which would have been a handy spot for it.

We decide to save the overkill for next time, leave a marked chest so we remember what's done, and wrap up with shoutouts to the regulars in the comments and a thank-you for all the feedback on the series.

The dragon is dead, but Release the B.S. is far from over. Captive Minecraft continues next episode.
