Fixing Item Sorter: Team B.S. Server Episode 28

  • Published on

The item sorter at the top of the Iron Island elevator works, right up until a chest fills. Then it makes a mess. This stream is about fixing that, draining the old chests back through the system, and lighting the bedrock floor under the farms. johnfal_92 joins the game partway through.

Supplies, and a sorter that works

A chest is waiting at the start with a sign on it: "Sea Lanterns, Aqua bricks, Stone slabs, blue glass", and "I pulled these from other chests and whatnot -JJ". Some new clearing has been done down below, too.

First stop is a working sorter, one Basket credits to "John." It's the same idea as Basket's, but it reaches one block further, and the redstone powers a block in a way Basket's doesn't. "So that must be the trick." Basket grabs some cooked fish on the way out.

Rebuilding the redstone

Basket's version is only one block long, so when too many items pile in, it fires and clears the slot, and the filler items that make the sorting work get lost. Basket pulls up a whole row, moves the repeaters back and extends the line like the one at John's.

Bone blocks become the filler. Four chests across take iron, then gunpowder, bones and arrows. One more is set up with slime blocks for the slime farm that doesn't exist yet. Poppies aren't wanted at all. They can "go to the end and just fall in lava."

Basket also explains what on this server isn't plain vanilla. There's a world border, so there is no endless supply of shulker boxes for all the redstone ideas Basket would like to try with them. There's a sleep system that clears the weather and skips to day, and endermen can't pick up blocks.

Draining the old chests

The storage room is full of chests holding random stuff. Basket cuts the bottom chest in each column loose from the sorter, then runs a line of hoppers from them all the way down. That's around 60 hoppers from elevation 60 or so. Everything in those chests drops into the farm's collection system, rides the elevator back up and gets sorted properly. It's slow, and "it's gonna kind of slow down everything else," but it beats sorting by hand. One rule: no bone blocks in the bottom chests, "because that would ruin my day."

Lights on the bedrock

Down at the bottom, Basket wants the bedrock to stay visible but lit. So every exposed spot four levels down gets a sea lantern. That means a lot of counting out loud: "one, two, three, four." Halfway through, the plan falls apart. "I'm lost in the floor." A viewer warns that an ender pearl down there could put you through the ground, and Basket pictures losing a shulker box full of good stuff that way: "that'd be pretty sad."

It doesn't need to be perfect. "If I miss any later on I can fix it up."

The view from above

From up high, the lighting looks good. "I like it." The iron golems and the passive mob farms are all in view. The old chests are slowly emptying, so Basket tosses everything that isn't iron or bone blocks into the drop and plans to stay AFK after the stream so it can sort through. Finding the slime chunks will be its own project later. The video ends on the credits, with no gameplay after them.
