Debugging Slime Farm: Team B.S. Server Episode 52

  • Published on

Episode 52 picks up the slime farm on top of Iron Island. Basket logged out in a spot away from the farm on purpose, to see whether slimes would collect while nobody was nearby, and added the rest of the slime farm pieces off camera. The plan is simple: get one section working, then copy it to the others. The problem shows up fast. The slimes land in the water, but they don't drown.

Slimes that just swim

Basket adds more water and watches. The slimes swim and bounce against the side of the pool instead of sinking. Iron golems come up as one way to kill them, if man-made golems don't mess with the iron farm, but Basket tries something cheaper first: trapdoors around the edge, so there's no wall to swim against. "Can you not swim now? Jerks." It seems to work. "I'm so clever, look at this." It also doesn't look great, so Basket swaps in iron bars and drops the water one level lower.

Then a slime spawns. "It's a little dance party. With one guy on the dance floor." It ends up in the water and, as far as Basket can tell, dies there.

Stair paths and stubborn water

With the farm left to run, Basket starts on the paths: stone slabs and sea lanterns, stepping down in a three, two, three, two pattern. There's a lot of counting out loud, and a few miscounts. The old helmet doesn't help underwater. "I really need to get a new helmet."

On one side the water refuses to stay put. The same 3x3 setup works fine across the farm, but here it keeps pouring into the gap. Then Basket tries a sponge. "Oh my god that's amazing." The wet sponges go into a furnace to dry, and the next stretches go quicker with the trick on hand.

A tour, and a real hat

Partway through, Basket explains the base. There are four iron golem farms in the corners. The golems move along the center and burn in lava, and their items travel up through the water into chests. Mob farms for skeletons and zombies work the same way. The slime farm, or "smile farm," is the work in progress.

johnfal_92 joins the game and types "okay coming with a real hat for you." It's a diamond helmet with Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity and Mending. "Ooh, I can breathe." Later johnfal_92 types "back to work :(" and logs off.

Can a big slime fit?

The next question is whether a big slime can even get down into the pit. Basket waits for one to spawn and lures it over. It can't drop in. The iron bars turn out to be the problem, so Basket takes some of them out. The slime also starts taking damage while it's stuck by Basket. "Oh no, I have thorns." The chestplate has Thorns on it.

At the end of the stream Basket checks the collection: "Yeah, 13 slimes. Not too bad." So the farm works, at least slowly.

Plans for the dig

Down below, Basket lays out what comes next. One job is ceiling lights in the torch-marked section. The bigger question is the dug-out space next to the iron golem farms: dig it out so the golems show through, or fill it back in. Basket leans toward filling it, with smooth stone and some natural-looking patches of diorite, because opening up the cells would mean redoing walls and one cell is rotated a little. Eventually the ladder goes, so you'll have to walk the paths. The stream ends watching a mob burn in the lava and its items fly up, then the credits, with no gameplay after them.
