Castle Wall Planning: Team B.S. Server Episode 65

  • Published on

Episode 65 opens on the hill at Basketopia where the castle is going to go. Basket has done some planning off camera and walks through it. One part of the layout moved over a block because "it was actually intersecting" with something else. The main entrance gets a gatehouse, with a drawbridge coming out over a pit. Walls will run around the whole thing, with an inner yard and maybe an inner keep, towers at the corners and stairs heading out the far side. One side stays a flat wall on purpose. Down below it there will be a dock and storage buildings, and Basket wants something like cargo cranes to lift goods up to the top.

Picking a palette

Before building, Basket needs to settle what the walls are made of. The chests have moved down to a basement, sorted, and a furnace is turning stone bricks into cracked stone bricks. The options on the table are cobblestone, plain stone bricks and the cracked ones. Cobblestone loses out, since it's "a big difference" next to how subtle the cracked brick is.

A viewer points out mossy stone bricks. "I forgot about the mossy ones." Basket crafts a stack of those, plus chiseled stone bricks and slabs, and starts trying them out on a test wall. Some of the cows from the prank are still wandering around. "I killed a bunch of them but yeah there's still quite a few around."

Basket also tries chiseled blocks, stairs, cobblestone and smooth stone slabs to see if any of them can make a line or a seam on the wall, the way quartz pillars can. Nothing quite works for a vertical line. The chiseled bricks might end up on the sides of the doorway instead.

The rule Basket lands on: mostly stone bricks, cracked ones here and there, and mossy now and then where it makes sense.

The first curve

The wall goes in one layer first, all the way around, so Basket can step back and look before committing. "I don't want to do the whole thing and take it all take it all apart, which I do often." Where the wall sits on dirt, it continues down and the dirt covers the outside.

The cracked bricks go in "not actually randomly but, you know, seemingly randomly." At one corner the choice is a square edge or a curve. Basket skips the arc generator and eyeballs it, then counts the steps out (two, two, a corner piece, two) to copy the same arc on the other side. The mossy bricks go in afterward in patches. "The whole wall could be covered in moss, really."

One downside comes up: the gaps in the wall will be places mobs can spawn, so the area will need mob-proofing once buildings are in.

A tower that moves

The next corner gets a curve too, and another stretch becomes a straight diagonal wall instead, since an inner curve there would look odd. Basket lays out the footprint of a round tower, then shifts the whole tower over by one block so its opening lines up with the path along the wall. A wall nearby moves over too. The walkway along the top will be set in, with doors into the tower.

Basket talks about the scale. "It's gonna be very large." The castle is just the start, with buildings planned all the way around. If the server ever resets, the plan is to pull the castle into a single-player world and keep going.

"We made some progress. We've got some walls going." Basket breeds a few cows and skips to day to end the stream. The credits follow with no gameplay after them.
