Basket Castle Gatehouse: Team B.S. Server Episode 67

  • Published on

Episode 67 starts at the foot of the gatehouse for Basket Castle, which has grown a lot off camera. A wide set of stairs climbs the hill to a ramp and the drawbridge, and chains run up the front into holes on either side. Inside, Basket walks through what is there so far: arrow slits on the second floor, set low so defenders can aim at anyone on the stairs, two portcullises, and little trapdoors into side rooms that are "dark" and might change size. On the top floor the drawbridge chains come in, and they need to hook up to "something that will be able to spin to raise or lower the drawbridge."

How tall is the wall?

There's a problem with the walls that will meet the gatehouse. The ground on one side is much lower than on the other, so a wall at one height would leave the gatehouse sitting between two different wall heights. Basket leans toward picking one height and matching it on both sides, which would make "a really big wall" on the low side, but hasn't decided yet. The rooms inside will be three blocks tall.

Basket digs out the ground around the gatehouse and builds the wall up with plain stone bricks and cracked ones here and there. The mossy patches can wait. "I'll come back through and like do some of this painting later."

Designing a crank

The drawbridge chains need a drum to wind around, and Basket isn't sure what blocks could make one. So it's off to a flat creative world, set to peaceful, to try shapes. The first drum is nether brick with iron bars for the chains, but "this thing isn't very obvious that it's something you can crank." Levers won't go on the blocks Basket wants them on. After looking up pictures of real drawbridge cranks, the drum gets smaller, with handles on the ends for people to hold and turn. "Yeah, I like it. I think it'll work."

Back on the server, Basket gathers nether bricks, nether brick fences and iron bars and builds it for real on the upper floor. The iron bars wrap over the drum, slabs sit above and below, and two levers made from cobblestone and sticks become the handles. "So now there's a crank to raise and lower the drawbridge." It was floating at first, so it gets legs, including one in the middle.

Murder holes and a bigger gatehouse

With the crank in, the gatehouse gets bigger. Basket pushes the building out so the stairs coming up from the gate are inside it rather than just passing through. Over those stairs go murder holes: a row of trapdoors down the middle, "to be able to drop stuff on the guys coming up the stairs." More arrow slits made from stairs face down the same path. Partway through, Basket runs out of cracked stone bricks and has to smelt more.

Upstairs, more iron bar chains come up through the floor, and a plain block next to them makes the bars connect sideways. Stair blocks fix that. Basket also caps the top so the portcullis can't be pulled up too far and have trouble getting back into place.

The view from outside

Basket heads out the main door to look at it all from the approach: murder holes, places to shoot from, the portcullises, and the drawbridge that the crank upstairs can raise. The front above the gate is a big flat wall, since nothing can open there. Basket thinks about adding a face or a lion head, or a three-wide banner design.

The last few minutes go into part of the roof, another arrow slit facing down, and ladders going up to the next level. Then time is up. The credits run to the end with no gameplay after them.
