Logical Networks, Episode 28: Factorio Season 1

  • Published on

Episode 28 is another live stream, and the robots from last time have multiplied. Off camera, many of the belts have been swapped for logistic robots, a central storage area has gone in, and robot production now feeds itself. "I went a little overboard with the drones, as you can see." Over the hour Basket has robots fuel the boilers, deliver straight to the player, carry purple science and haul coal to a new plastic plant. By the end the research box reads Worker robot cargo size 2, and power is still running short.

Drones everywhere

The stream opens with a tour of the chest types: storage chests take whatever the robots bring, a passive provider holds items until something asks for them, an active provider pushes everything out to storage, and a requester chest asks for a set amount. Power is low from the start. "It concerns me that everything has stopped now that I'm out of power."

At the boilers, Basket puts in requester chests and copies the request into each one, so robots fly in solid fuel instead of relying on the belts alone. A train ride to the power plant shows its coal full. The commentary blames the fighting: "whenever we're in combat we have so many lasers everywhere."

Then comes a trick with an old chest of leftovers. Switched to an active provider, it empties as a line of robots carries everything off to main storage. Robots queue at the roboports to recharge, which is why there are two of them there.

Robots bring the goods

The first research of the stream is Character logistic slots, which lets the player request items from the network. Basket sets requests for iron and copper, and robots fly over and drop them off. The game awards the "You've got a package" achievement. "That's amazing." Fast inserters fill passive provider chests at the iron and copper lines, so those plates can be fetched from anywhere in range.

Plastic is the bottleneck. Crude oil fills slowly while power is low, so Basket adds chemical plants fed with light oil and water, and pipes them past each other with underground pipes.

Chasing purple science

At the research screen, Worker robot speed 3 lists a purple pack in its cost, which the base does not make. "I would like purple science." The research tree points the way, and the research box moves through Explosives, Flammables and Rocketry to Alien technology. "Oh, Alien Technology. Oh, I've been collecting those, actually."

On the western side, the defenses never got laser turrets, so Basket swaps some in. Nearby goes a single assembler for purple science, with a requester chest for its ingredients and a passive provider for its output. "It's not super efficient, but it'll be good enough." Character logistic trash slots come next: "Allows you to send unwanted items to the logistic network. Oh yes, I want it."

Coal by robot

A new plastic plant goes up away from the old one, since robots can carry the inputs now. It sits idle waiting for coal, so Basket puts fast inserters and provider chests in the big coal area and raises the plant's coal request. Soon plastic is coming out and robots are carrying it off.

The robot network then grows out to the walls. One more roboport goes in near the front, the orange shaded area spreads over the rails and trees, and robots start repairing. Basket asks for 50 walls and fills a gap.

Where it ends

With nothing researching, Basket starts Worker robot cargo size 2. A requester chest at the labs asks for 200 purple science and feeds it onto the lab belt. Two more small builds follow: an assembler that makes power poles into a provider chest, and another for the wood they need. Power dips again ("I'm having some power issues it looks like"), and the next goal is named: "drone combat is what I will do next." The video ends on the main assembly area with Worker robot cargo size 2 still researching.
