Season 1 of Basket's Kerbal Space Program is the GopherCraft Great Space Race, and this is where it starts. The title card reads "GopherCraft Great Space Race, Season 1, Race to the Mun." The rule, as Basket puts it, is to be the first to reach the Mun, do a space walk and get back. Basket starts in Career mode with little practice ("I haven't really played this very much"), loses two kerbals on the launch pad, and by the end has flown Basket 5 into space and brought it home with 33 science banked.
Two failures on the pad
Basket 1 is a command pod, a parachute, a liquid fuel engine and a solid booster, with Jebediah Kerman aboard. It does not get far. The Flight Results read "Catastrophic Failure!": the solid booster's exhaust damaged the liquid engine, the LV-T30 exploded from overheating, and Jebediah Kerman was killed five seconds after liftoff.
Basket swaps the two engines ("I have the staging backwards") and saves the result as Basket 2, with Bill Kerman in the pod. The LV-T30 explodes again, the parachute opens in the smoke, and the results list Bill Kerman as killed at sixteen seconds.
Basket 3 lands in the Space Center
The third version drops the bottom engine. Bob Kerman flies it, files a crew report from the pad, and climbs until the sky goes dark before falling back. Under the parachute it drifts over the buildings. "I'm gonna land in that building, I think. Oh no, I'll be okay." It comes down on the grass. The Science Summary pays 8.5 science for a crew report over Kerbin's Shores and the recovery, and Basket spends it on Basic Rocketry.
Mystery Goo, the hard way
Basket 4 adds a Mystery Goo canister and more fuel. Basket observes the goo in flight, but the canister was on the part that got dropped, and the capsule lands near the runway with only 0.8 science for the recovery. "I didn't get the mystery goo stuff."
Basket 5 reaches space
Basket 5 moves the goo up beside the pod and runs on liquid fuel. "Wow, I'm really high up. I'm in space, I think." In black sky above Kerbin the goo "seems to have clumped into a sphere" and become brittle, and the crew report says the sky is mostly below. There is no fuel left to steer with, and the map view shows the path falling back. Transmitting fails for lack of electric charge, so Basket keeps the data, and the pod splashes down on its parachute and floats. The summary pays 21.5 science, taking the total to 33.
Where it ends
Basket researches General Rocketry, leaving 13 science, and thinks the craft still can't steer in space. At the Astronaut Complex, where kerbals are rated on courage and stupidity, Basket hires Anton Kerman and Matgan Kerman, so Bob, Anton and Matgan are available. The end card wishes Gopherboy, Scoti Garbidis and Pikerize good luck. Basket 6 is next.
