Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 16: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 16 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race opens with Orbit IX already orbiting the Mun, Anton Kerman aboard. Basket plans a way home, burns, and leaves it coasting. Then the work moves to the Space Center: new research, a new craft called Mun Lander I, and two test flights on Kerbin. The video ends with Mun Lander I on the launch pad and Jebediah in the pod.

Leaving the Mun

The Tracking Station lists Orbit IX as "Orbiting the Mun" and Orbit V still orbiting Kerbin. "We are going to try to get our guy around the Mun back to Kerbin." The first maneuver nodes point the wrong way. "Let me start over." Basket waits for the craft to swing around and plans again. After an hour of time warp the burn comes. "Oh, it's a super short burn. Okay, kill it." The map now shows a Mun escape a few hours ahead, and Basket adds a second node, about ten seconds of burning, a day later.

The crew report has nothing new: "You look at the surface of the Mun and try to find a good landing space."

Heavy Rocketry and Mun Lander I

Back at the Space Center there are 107 science to spend. Basket buys Heavy Rocketry for 90 and finds "a huge tank" among the new parts. In the VAB it goes under the Orbit IX design, with ladders, landing struts and an engine at the bottom. The name field now reads Mun Lander I.

Testing on Kerbin

The first test flies Hanvan Kerman in the lab at night. Basket has to look up the key for the landing legs ("it is the G key") and the craft settles under parachutes. "So that did land. It didn't blow up." Hanvan climbs out to try the ladder. A jump and grab almost reaches it: "You can almost do it."

The second test lands again with Hanvan aboard, then throttles up to see whether the lander engine can lift it. "It doesn't go anywhere." The recovery is worth no science, leaving 17. Basket thinks about a different engine, then keeps this one: "I feel like that's enough to lift off the Mun."

Crew for the Mun

Basket hires new kerbals at the Astronaut Complex, and Obbo and Dooddred Kerman join the list. The crew screen puts Jebediah Kerman in the Command Pod Mk1, Hanvan Kerman in the lab and a check next to Obbo. "I only trust Jebediah to fly."

Where it ends

Mun Lander I sits on the launch pad at night. "This guy is going to go to the Mun. It's a little wobbly." The launch waits for the next episode. Orbit IX is still around the Mun, on its way out, and Orbit V is still in Kerbin orbit. The end card follows.
