Great Space Race, Season 1, Episode 18: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Episode 18 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race opens with two craft in space. Orbit IX is heading back toward Kerbin with Anton Kerman, and Mun Lander I is on its way to the Mun with Jebediah Kerman in the pod. Orbit IX comes home with a pile of science. Mun Lander I gets into orbit around the Mun, then tries to land, and the game calls it a catastrophic failure.

Two craft, two burns

Mun Lander I has a maneuver node coming up, but the game is not ready for it. "They don't want to do it yet." After some fiddling the map shows the path meeting the Mun in about a day. Basket switches to Orbit IX, which has its own node four hours out. "Fingers ready on the Shift and the X key." The burn is short, and the map afterward is hard to read: "I guess if they don't tell you, then it must be that you're actually running into the planet."

Orbit IX comes home

After some time warp the path clearly crosses Kerbin. "So that will land shortly, or by shortly I mean in 30 minutes." Basket drops the leftover tanks before the fiery part ("You're coming home, Anton"), and the capsule comes down under parachutes at night. "Alright, we have landed."

The Science Summary for Orbit IX lists four experiments, led by a Materials Study high over the Mun worth 75. That is +115.1 science, for 134 in all. "Anton and the rest of the crew have successfully orbited the Mun and returned." In R&D, Basket wants Advanced Exploration for its extendable ladder, but it costs 160.

Mun Lander I reaches the Mun

Back on Mun Lander I, the question is whether to orbit first. "What do you think, Jebediah? You want to just try and land?" Basket goes for an orbit. "Here's the Mun. I'm very close to it." The burn runs long, and afterward the map shows Mun Lander I on a closed orbit around the Mun. A Mystery Goo reading comes back with "The Goo feels right at home here."

Before trying to land, Basket transmits data and starts the lab on the goo "just in case," hoping for enough science to buy the ladder.

The landing try

At the low point of the orbit Basket plans a node that drops the path into the surface. "I bet I crash." The burn takes about a minute and a half. On the way down Basket kills the engines and flips the craft. "I feel like I'm falling." The legs go down, but too late: "Oh no, too fast."

The Flight Results window reads "Outcome: Catastrophic Failure!" and lists Jebediah, Thompvin and Enzer Kerman as killed. Basket has the lesson ready: after leaving orbit, "I should have turned around and then throttle the tiny bit until my descent was very, very low."

Where it ends

The science sent home from Mun orbit still counts. "Do we have enough for the ladder? We do. We have three over." The tech tree now shows Science: 3. Basket sums it up: "We at least touch surface to the Mun. Unfortunately it was at a fast pace." The lander needs rethinking, and there is still no Mun landing. The end card follows over the Space Center.
