Episode 22 of the GopherCraft Great Space Race opens with Bob Kerman's Mun Lander III already in orbit around the Mun. Basket spends the video bringing it down for a landing. It comes in too fast and breaks apart on the surface. The video ends with Bill Kerman's Mun Lander III still orbiting Kerbin, waiting on its own burn.
Orbiting the Mun
The map shows the lander on a closed orbit around the Mun. The first job is a 30 second burn "to decrease our orbit." Basket adds: "I hope we have enough fuel to get home at the end of all this." The map also shows details about the other Mun Lander III, set as the target. "I don't know why it's telling me about this."
Slowing down by hand
There is no maneuver node for the next part. Basket points the engine against the direction of travel and burns, watching the orbit shrink. "I feel weird not doing a maneuver node to actually do something." The orbit speed drops from about 490 m/s to under 30. "I think 30 is enough for the landing legs to still function." "Bob isn't so sure about this plan."
With the engines off, the lander starts falling and picks up speed. "Why are we gaining speed?" "I think actually this is just regular gravity." Basket says the landing legs will go down and lets the lander drop to save fuel.
Coming in too fast
The surface comes up quickly. The navball reads more than 250 m/s on the way down, and Basket throttles up late. "I'm going to throttle this up quite a bit, so I can hopefully slow down enough." The lander is still doing well over 100 m/s when it reaches the ground.
It hits, tips over and explodes. For a moment the game shows its "[F] Board" prompt for a kerbal outside the craft, then the rest of it blows up too. "Maybe EVA was a bad idea." Bob's portrait does not come back.
Basket's verdict: "It was pretty close. But I was going too fast, because I was trying to conserve on fuel, and I couldn't tell how far away I was." Then: "Nearly a success. And it was destroyed."
Where it ends
The tracking station lists three objects: Orbit V and Mun Lander III, both orbiting Kerbin, and a "Mun Lander III Ship" marked as landed at the Mun. Basket switches to the Mun Lander III still near Kerbin, with Bill Kerman's portrait in the corner. Its planned burn, 99.2 m/s, is a day away. "We can do the same sort of thing, hopefully we'll have enough fuel." The burn has not happened when "To be continued..." comes up. No kerbal has made a safe landing on the Mun yet.
