Mobile Processing Lab, Season 2: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

This Season 2 stream on GopherCraft's multiplayer server is about one new part, the Mobile Processing Lab. Basket builds it into a much bigger rocket, needs two designs and a lot of extra engines to get it off the ground, and flies The Success 2007 XLT to an orbit around the Mun. The lab fills up with science out there. The ride home goes wrong, and the capsule burns up on the way down with Raysy Kerman inside.

A new toy in the research tree

The stream opens in the research tree. Basket looks at the bigger engines first, but the Mainsail costs more science than there is to spend. The pick is mobile processing instead: "No longer are you limited to research facilities only on Kerbin." The commentary admits, "I don't exactly know how it works but I think it's the thing I want."

In the Vehicle Assembly Building, Basket loads The Success 2005 XLT and takes most of it apart. The Mobile Processing Lab goes in under the capsule, with a heat shield under the pod "because everything burned up last time." Below that come big Rockomax tanks on big decouplers, a smaller engine with landing legs for the Mun, fins, and a ladder running all the way down the side. The name field changes to The Success 2006 XLT. The crew list puts Jebediah Kerman in the Mk1 Command Pod and two scientists, Bob Kerman and Erbal Kerman, in the lab.

The first launch goes nowhere because the staging is wrong, and Basket reverts to the Vehicle Assembly Building to fix it and add parachutes. On the next try Raysy Kerman sits in the pod. The rocket rises, slowly, then tips over. "I think I need more rockets."

More rockets

So it gets more rockets. Six more stacks of tanks and engines go around the outside, lined up with the move tool, then nose cones, struts and wings. "Rockets on rockets. What could go wrong?" The name field now reads The Success 2007 XLT.

On the pad the engines fire and the rocket just sits there in its own smoke for a few minutes, burning fuel until it is light enough to move. "Okay, we're starting to take off, everybody." Basket climbs straight up rather than risk a turn, fixes a staging mix-up on the way, drops the big outer tanks and makes it to orbit around Kerbin with fuel to spare. "It's actually going better than I thought it would."

Science around the Mun

With the Mun set as the target, a burn gives an encounter. "OK, we have an encounter. Amazing." A short burn on arrival puts The Success 2007 XLT in orbit around the Mun.

At first the lab shows a rate of zero science per day. It needs data to work on. The science windows make the case for it: a Materials Study high over the Mun is worth 50 science recovered or 17.5 transmitted, but "Process in the Lab: 62 Data = 310 Science." Basket runs the Mystery Goo, the barometer, the thermometer and a crew report, has Raysy step out for an EVA report, and feeds it all to the lab. Then it is time warp, and the lab's Science count climbs over many in-game days until it reads 500.000/500, "Science Full."

Sending it home is the hard part. In the Mun's shadow the lab reports no power, and once the batteries charge back up, the transmission gets to about five percent before the power runs out again. "If I had more batteries or enough solar panels I would be able to transmit it." Basket decides to skip a landing and fly the whole lab back to Kerbin. "This game got even better."

The trip home

The burn toward Kerbin goes in, and a stray press of the spacebar drops a stage on the way. "I hit spacebar, but it's still going." Raysy goes out on EVA to pull the Mystery Goo results into the capsule, and the screen confirms "All Items Stored." The data in the lab stays where it is.

Near Kerbin, Basket drops the last engine even though its tank is still full. Then the Mun gets in the way. The commentary sums it up: "The Mun ended up running into us and giving us grief." The path changes, and there is no more gentle pass through the atmosphere. "So now we are no longer going to do an atmospheric thing."

The ship wrapped in a long plume of orange and yellow reentry flame against black space, the navball reading Orbit 3194.4 m/s and a column of parachute icons in the staging stack

The ship points retrograde and comes in steep, lit up in flame. "We're coming in hot. Literally."

Where it ends

The Flight Results for The Success 2007 XLT say "Outcome: Catastrophic Failure!" The Mk1 Command Pod, the SC-9001 Science Jr., the Mystery Goo unit and the heat shield all "exploded due to overheating," and the log reads "Raysy Kerman was killed." None of the lab's science makes it home. The stream ends on the Flight Results, with the next ideas already on the list: Mainsails once there is enough science, and lots of solar panels and batteries for the next lab.
