This Season 2 stream on GopherCraft's multiplayer server has one goal: "try to land on the Mun and hopefully that'll work." Basket spends science on landing legs, adds a lander to the XLT design and flies The Success 2001 XLT to the Mun with Jebediah Kerman aboard. The landing works, mostly. The engine does not survive it, and the video ends with Jebediah on the Mun and no way back.
Looking for landing legs
The stream opens in the R&D building with science to spend. Basket goes through the tech tree branch by branch hunting for landing legs, and a viewer points out where they are: "landing struts, interesting, so it's called landing." Getting there means unlocking one node first, and Basket picks the one with a reaction wheel over the airplane parts: "I don't plan on doing any plane stuff."
Back in the VAB, the XLT gets a new bottom section: a decoupler, a small engine of its own and four landing legs. Ladders cost more science than is left, so the lander has none. "If I EVA, I won't take a surface sample." The title bar reads The Success 2001 XLT. "I can in theory jump back up here after I EVA. If not, you know, it was fun."
To the Mun
The launch is at night, and the portrait in the corner is Jebediah Kerman's. The climb is calmer than on earlier streams ("we're not spinning around like crazy"), and a timed burn gives an orbit around Kerbin with fuel left over. Basket sets the Mun as the target, lines up an encounter on the approach side, and cuts the engines as soon as the encounter appears, which saves a little fuel. A short burn at the Mun gives what the commentary calls "a beautiful orbit."
Coming down
Now the hard part. "I'm not the best at landing, if you watch my other series." The plan is to burn retrograde until the ship is dropping almost straight down, then shed speed close to the ground. A viewer suggests warping down to 10,000 meters before burning hard. Basket ditches one engine on the way, picks a spot on the light side, and keeps slowing down without being able to see the shadow. Then it appears, on a slope.
The lander touches down, and the engine at its base explodes in a ball of fire. The rest stays upright, leaning on its legs. "Well, on the bright side, I could transmit." The Mystery Goo and the thermometer go first, before anything else can go wrong. The commentary's guess: a little too fast, on a slope, and the legs gave just enough for the engine to hit the ground.
Jebediah on the Mun
Jebediah Kerman climbs out for an EVA report and a surface sample, then plants a flag. The Name Site box reads The Success 2001 XLT Landing! Meanwhile the lander keeps sliding down the slope. "Stop sliding."
With no ladder, getting back in is the problem. Jebediah jumps at the hatch several times and misses. "What if I just blow up the other legs?" The lander ends up lying on its side, and Jebediah walks over and climbs in through the crew hatch. Basket waits for the batteries to charge in the sunlight and transmits the rest of the science.
The verdict: "everything was awesome except the engine blew up." Next time the legs might go lower, and the landing slower. "Jebediah now lives in the Mun until he's rescued."
Where it ends
Back at the Space Center, the new science buys the barometer and the ladders, then a node with more fuel tanks and fuel lines. "I landed, but I won't come back." The stream ends there, with Jebediah Kerman inside the lander on its side on the Mun and no engine to leave with. The end cards follow.
