Season 3 is a single-player game in Science mode. The game has been updated since the last stream, and the first change the commentary spots is the type: "they changed the font, this is bigger font." Jebediah Kerman flies the old Science 18 design past the Mun and back, then does it again in Science 19 with barometers on board. The science goes into a Mobile Processing Lab, which rides up on a new rocket, Science 20, with a newly hired scientist in the pod. It does not fly the way it should. Science 16, where the last stream left Bob Kerman, is still listed as orbiting Kerbin.
Bigger font, same rocket
In the VAB the parts list has been sorted into new groups. "I like this font, this font is a lot better, I can read things."
The craft list has a warning on the old designs: Science 17 and Science 18 both "Contains locked or invalid parts." Science 18 loads anyway, and the launch check points at two antennas the save does not have. A surface-mount antenna replaces them. Jebediah Kerman flies it, and the gravity turn is taken slowly this time: "we're not spinning so it's good." It reaches orbit with fuel left over.
Jeb goes past the Mun
A short burn sets up an encounter with the Mun, and the plan stays modest: "I may not try to orbit the moon because I might get stuck, I might just encounter, do science and then come back." High over the Mun, Jeb logs the temperature, a crew report and an EVA report and transmits them, while the goo and the materials bay are kept for the trip home.
A return burn bends the path back toward Kerbin. The engine is dropped, the capsule turns retrograde and the reentry starts steep. "I have a couple side batteries which might blow up." By the commentary's count, two of them do.
The rest holds together. The parachutes open on the way down and Science 18 splashes into the ocean in one piece. Jeb takes a surface sample from the water, and the Mission Summary for Science 18 lists six experiments recovered, including "Recovery of a vessel returned from a fly-by of the Mun." The biggest single item is the materials study high over the Mun at +50. The total reads 233.
Science 19 and the barometers
Back in the VAB, a look at the science parts turns up one that has not flown yet. "I should have added the barometer in here." Then, "In fact, I wanted two barometers." They go inside the bay, and Jeb takes the same design up again.
The second flight runs like the first, with pressure readings over Kerbin and on another pass by the Mun. This time the reentry comes down on the night side, and something goes missing. "Oh, actually, look at that. We lost the materials bays that got blown up."
The capsule lands just off a dark coastline. Jeb climbs out to swim for land that might be somewhere new, but it is farther than it looks. "Okay. Not practical." The Mission Summary for Science 19 lists six experiments, among them a "Surface Sample from Kerbin's Shores" and atmospheric pressure scans over Kerbin and over the Mun, for +66.6 science and a total of 220. "Good job barometer."
A lab on Science 20
The research tree has the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2 within reach, and the commentary is not sure about it: "I'm still hesitant to use this or not just because I feel like it's a little cheaty." A viewer suggests getting it and using it, and the commentary goes along with it.
A new rocket goes together around the lab: a Mk1 Command Pod with a decoupler and a parachute, the lab under it, rows of batteries ("We don't have solar panels yet") and a cluster of fuel tanks and engines. It is saved as Science 20.
This flight wants a scientist, so the Astronaut Complex hires one, and the crew screen puts Luty Kerman, Scientist, in the Mk1 Command Pod.
Science 20 lifts off from the pad at night and does not climb the way it should. "It's kind of top-heavy." The commentary also spots a gap: "I didn't have any science things on here, so all I can do is report." The engines are cut, the stages go, and the pod comes down under its parachute. The Mission Summary for Science 20 has a single line: "Recovery of a vessel that survived a flight." The fix for next time is to "make this look more like a dart" and add science parts.
Where it ends
The stream ends at the Space Center at night after Science 20 is recovered. Jebediah and Luty are home, and the Tracking Station still lists Science 16 as "Orbiting Kerbin," where the last stream left Bob Kerman. Science 20 has not reached orbit, and the commentary plans to rebuild it for next time.
