Season 3 is a single-player game in Science mode. This stream opens with Science 28 already on its way down, Catty Kerman aboard. Once it lands, the 1915.5 science in the bank buys a three-seat command pod and a new, much bigger rocket: Skypuncher 1, with Jebediah Kerman flying and two scientists along. It reaches the Mun and fills its lab with data, but it has no antenna to send it home. On the way back to Kerbin the lab section is let go with both scientists still inside, and only Jebediah comes down.
Science 28 comes home
The stream picks up with Science 28 glowing through reentry over a dark Kerbin. The commentary worries about what broke off: "I think what blew up was I had a barometer and a thermometer that was on the outside of this thing." The parachutes are still there, and the capsule settles in the dark on hilly ground.
It is a new place, Kerbin's Grasslands, so Catty files a crew report, goes outside for an EVA report and takes a surface sample before the vessel is recovered. The Mission Summary for Science 28 adds +4.1, including "Recovery of a vessel returned from a fly-by of the Mun", for 1915 science.
Skypuncher 1
That much science goes a long way in the research tree. The commentary picks up "our new fancy, uh, three-person pod," the Mk1-2 Command Pod, then goes looking for "heat shields that are big" and finds the 2.5 meter one. The counter is down to 705.5 before building starts.
The new rocket stacks the Mk1-2 Command Pod on a big heat shield and decoupler, with the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2 below it. A service bay holds goo canisters, two barometers and thermometers. Big Gigantor XL solar arrays go on the sides, smaller panels as backups, and then the engines: "I like to go big and go home." Ring after ring of fuel stacks goes around the core, with Mainsail engines under the inner ring and nose cones on top. "These nose cones make it look like... yeah, it's a bunch of crayons." The name field reads Skypuncher 1.
The crew is Jebediah Kerman, Pilot, and two scientists, Catty Kerman and Luty Kerman. The VAB lists Luty among the available crew.
The Mainsails lift it off the pad. "It takes off, look at that." There are no fins, and the commentary expects a spin, but it climbs, turns over and reaches orbit after dropping the outer engines partway through the burn. Catty moves into the lab, files a crew report and stores the readings from the service bay.
Around the Mun
A burn on the far side of Kerbin sends Skypuncher 1 toward the Mun. The encounter is close: "right now I'm currently on a collision course. With the moon." A second maneuver moves the path off the surface. Near the Mun, the big engines are pointed away and dropped so the large solar arrays have room to open.
Luty moves into the science section too. The experiments are cleaned and run again high over the Mun, and the lab starts researching. Time warp runs for months while the data turns into science. Then it is time to send it home, and there is nothing to send it with. "I did not put an antenna on this thing at all."
The commentary decides to bring it all back by hand instead. An escape burn puts Skypuncher 1 back toward Kerbin, and a final burn sets up some "patented, not really patented, atmospheric braking."
Two scientists lost
Before reentry, the remaining engines are dropped behind the capsule. The lab section goes with them, with Catty and Luty still inside. "Oh no."
The commentary points out that the piece has no parachute and no heat shield, then watches it fall into the atmosphere: "Okay, it burned up. Confirmed." The capsule, with Jebediah Kerman alone aboard, rides its heat shield down, and the parachutes open over land. "Can we have a moment of silence for those who died in the name of science?"
It lands upright in Kerbin's Grasslands. Jebediah takes a surface sample and an EVA report, the service bay is checked for one last reading, and the vessel is recovered.
Where it ends
The Mission Summary for Skypuncher 1 gives +36.6 science, for 607. In the Astronaut Complex, Luty Kerman and Catty Kerman are both listed as Missing In Action. The commentary sums it up: "we made a cool rocket, we forgot an antenna." The stream ends at the Space Center with 607.1 science, and this is the last Season 3 episode on the channel.
