Manned Minmus Encounter, Season 5, Episode 6: Kerbal Space Program

  • Published on

Season 5 is a modded single-player game in Science mode, and one goal of the season is that no kerbal dies. This stream opens at the Space Center with 227.1 science and the rocket Science10 in the VAB. The plan, in the commentary's words, is "the exact same thing, but with a person." Jebediah Kerman rides Science10 past Minmus, takes science high above it, and splashes down in Kerbin's ocean. The haul pays for two new research nodes.

A pilot for Science10

The crew list in the VAB offers Jebediah Kerman, Bill Kerman, Bob Kerman and Valentina Kerman for the Mk1 Command Pod. The commentary guesses at what each job is good for ("this guy can probably fix stuff," "scientists can reset experiments") and puts Jebediah in.

Science10 lifts off on its cluster of boosters and makes orbit around Kerbin. "Not the most graceful launch, but we have a lot of fuel when we get up here."

With Minmus set as the target, the commentary drags the maneuver node around until the paths meet, and a burn of about a minute gives an encounter that will swing the craft back toward Kerbin on its own. "When we have the encounter, we don't really have to orbit."

High over Minmus

On the way out the signal drops. Extending the Communotron 16 antenna brings it back. "If I would have extended the other antenna on the robot one, I probably would have been okay."

At Minmus the barometer and thermometer read nothing worth keeping, but a crew report, a materials study and a Mystery Goo observation all count "while in space high over Minmus." The crew report notes that "the lake beds seem relatively flat, perhaps we could land there." Then Jebediah climbs out of the hatch for an EVA report worth 20 science and climbs back in.

On the way home the Life Support Status window lists 292 supplies on Science10 and gives Jebediah Kerman 26 days (+15d). "We have plenty of days."

The fire and the ocean

A retrograde burn drops the low point of the orbit into Kerbin's air, and the engines are dropped before the capsule meets it. The capsule comes in at over 3,200 meters per second with a long glowing object close behind. "That was intense. Big gigantic missile flying from my craft." No extra laps are needed: "we don't have to do any laps, awesome."

The parachutes open over the water and the capsule splashes down. Jebediah steps out onto the water and takes a surface sample before the vessel is recovered. "Successful, nobody died mission. Awesome."

Where it ends

The Mission Summary for Science10 lists 6 experiments recovered and 55.2 science earned, for 282, less than "the big burst we did last time."

The Mission Summary for Science10: 6 Experiments Recovered, a Crew Report, an EVA Report, a Materials Study and a Mystery Goo Observation while in space high over Minmus, a Surface Sample from Kerbin's Water and the recovery of a vessel returned from a fly-by of Minmus, 55.2 Science earned, Science: 282

In the tech tree the commentary wants "the mobile processing center" and some experiments to "play around with," and researches Advanced Exploration for 160, taking the counter from 282.2 to 122.2. The Command Modules node, with a pod that "lets you bring more people," costs more than is left. Landing, with the LY-10 Small Landing Gear, goes in for 90, and the counter ends at 32.2. The stream closes at the Space Center at night, on Year 1, Day 77. Jebediah is home, no kerbal has been lost, and the next mission is still open: "we'll see what we make next."
