Season 5 is a modded single-player game in Science mode, and one goal of the season is that no kerbal dies. This stream opens on Day 77 with 45.3 science, and the job is to fix the ladders that kept Bob Kerman out of the lab last time. Science12 gets Bob into the lab, but the way back out is through the wrong door, and it takes the jetpack to get back. A second rebuild, SolarBat1, ends the stream with Bob back in orbit doing research.
Science12 and a new ladder
The plan, in the commentary's words, is to "modify the last ship design so that I don't have to rely on those ladders that weren't working." Science11 comes out of the save list and gets reworked in the VAB. A crew part with "a ladder and a door" turns out too big, so ladders go on the sloped section instead, which should let a kerbal climb "from the top all the way down." The new name is Science12.
Bob Kerman, the scientist, flies it this time. "I feel like I didn't change enough to warrant having to worry about doing unmanned." The long craft wobbles on the way up until the outer boosters drop, and then it settles into orbit around Kerbin.
Into the lab
In orbit Bob climbs out, takes an EVA report and works along the hull toward the lab. "Okay, good. Next test is down here." The ladders hold, and Bob boards the science building.
The experiments that were worth nothing up here go into the lab as data instead. Research starts, but the batteries drain faster than the solar panels fill them, and on the dark side of the planet the power runs out. After a while the lab has made 0.236 science. "I forgot how slow it was." The mission is called off: more solar panels first.
The wrong door
Getting Bob back to the capsule is the hard part. Each time Bob goes on EVA from the lab, Bob comes out on the side without ladders. "You're on the wrong side. Can you give me the other side, please?" Crew transfer will not move Bob through the parts in between either. A ladder around the top of the hull is tried while the ship slowly spins. "So this might be my one oops on the whole thing."
The answer is the jetpack. The key list in the settings shows how to switch it on, and after a few pushes the wrong way, Bob jets back to the hull.
Bob boards the capsule. "Okay, well, that was fun, wasn't it?" The note to self: more solar panels, and ladders on the side the kerbal actually comes out of.
Down on Kerbin's Shores
The fuel stages are dropped and the capsule burns back in. The parachutes open over the ocean, and it splashes down close to land. The landing turns out to count as Kerbin's Shores, a new place, so Bob runs every experiment and steps out for a report and a sample. "We got some science from this mission because we happen to land near shore."
The Mission Summary lists 8 experiments and 39.5 science earned, for 84.8. In the tech tree that is just short of the next layer, and nothing is bought.
SolarBat1
Back in the VAB, the recycler and other parts that "don't actually function because we don't have enough power" come off. Life support cans, a wall of solar panels and a stack of batteries go on. Then the lab section is rotated so its hatch faces the ladders, and one more ladder is added. Holding Alt while clicking copies parts, which speeds up the panel work. The craft becomes SolarBat1.
On the launch pad, with Jebediah Kerman in the capsule and Bob in the lab, Bob goes on EVA and comes out on the side with the ladders. "Okay, good." An uncrewed SolarBat1 goes up next, "just to be on the safe side," and wobbles about as much as before, which is good enough. Then Bob flies it alone with six years of food aboard.
Where it ends
In orbit, Bob steps out on the ladder side, files the reports, and stores the data in the lab. In sunlight the panels keep up, and in the shade the batteries no longer run flat. The lab shows 77.956 data and 0.9472 science a day, and turning life support on lifts Bob's supplies to 13 years.
The stream ends there, with SolarBat1 in orbit around Kerbin, Bob at work in the lab, 84.8 science banked, and no kerbal lost. The plan is to let the lab run and bring Bob home next time.
